Yes, we had recently moved in and they were looking for the (troublemaker) son of the previous owners.

@yellowbird: Good for you for checking! I've never had a cop show up unannounced at my house, but until recently (maybe until kids), I'd have probably just opened the door.

I did have a break-in at my apartment when I lived in Chicago. We had two cops come to investigate and at some point while they were there, they decided they weren't sure the intruders were gone and drew their weapons. Terrified me. The intruder was actually gone, though. I ran into one of them at a coffee shop the next week and we had the most awkward conversation. I'm pretty sure the other cops with him thought we must have just broken up or something. It was super weird.

@yellowbird: I did.. Im actually a block from the police station so it wouldn't have occurred to me that it might not be legit. In some of my previous residences though I would have been freaked out!

No but one time I got home and a police cruiser was sitting in my driveway. I got out and asked him what he was doing and he said he was on surveillance or something (but it was a marked car..?). I said okay and went inside and he left a few min later, but it was weird.

Oh also I guess one did actually knock on me door once but only because I called. (Car was broken into and I reported it).

No knock on my door but when I was in middle school I was home alone and looked out our living room to see a SWAT team run up my driveway straight at me. A couple steps from the house they changed direction and charged the house two doors down. I was so relieved that they weren't coming for me that I have no idea what they were actually doing.

Only once after there was a tornado in my neighborhood, a cop went around making sure everyone was ok.

Once my house was surrounded and forceably entered by armed police. Turned out they got a bunk tip that someone was being held against their will at my house. I was PISSED and they ended up having to replace two of my doors.

Yes. He was asking about one of my neighbors. It was the middle of the day, he immediately showed me his badge, D was home, and I could see the patrol car.

Also, when I lived in NOLA...there was a police chase around my house! Like the guy was running through our backyard and down the alleys that lined our house! It was night time, and there were dozens of officers, (at least a dozen) plus dogs. They were knocking to tell us to stay down and away from windows, because the suspect was armed (he had shot a cop).

And several times when I was in high school. I had stepsiblings who were constantly in trouble, and were being looked for. And once or twice for domestic situations (like my dad and stepbrother getting in a fist fight, or my stepsister maybe OD'ing in the bathroom).

I had cops come to my parents house in college when I called them because I found an intruder in the house. And then a few years ago cops knocked on my apartment door to tell us they were suggesting everyone in my apartment complex evacuate because of flooding.

Twice. Once to tell me my brother had died (my parents were out of the country). A second time to ask questions about someone across the street. A third time, there was a cruiser in front of my house and I asked what was going on

@Modern Daisy: That's why I stopped using my alarm system. Once I fell asleep on the couch (on halloween) and woke up to my alarm going off and it stating the window above me was breeched.

Then one night right after I went upstairs to bed, the same thing happened.

Bot times it was because the remote control fell off the arm of the couch.

@Modern Daisy: Oh the alarm! When my DH first moved in and I was showing him how to use the alarm. I entered the duress code. I reset it quickly. I didn't know that when you enter the duress code that they show up regardless, even if you reset. And of course the officer was very skeptical of me saying everything was fine since DH was hovering over the top of me at the door. I should mention he wasn't DH then, just my boyfriend.

Just once because I'd called to report that my neighbor was in our maple tree, chain saw in hand, and he threatening to cut it down unless we allowed him access into our back yard.

While I was on the line with the police my neighbor cut a huge limb (literally half of the hundred year old tree) right into our yard, not 5 feet from where I was standing. It was crazy. I was so glad the police were there quickly to calm the situation down.
