Related to my earlier question of whether our intended name might be too weird, I'm wondering about whether it will fit a daughter once she arrived. It's an odd example, but when we got our dog, we had a name planned for him. His name was going to be Bowser, and we loved it and it worked from looking at the pictures and everything. And then he got here and it just was NOT his name. His name IS Link (one of the names we had considered and decided against), and it just suited him so well there was no question. Has anyone had that happen with a baby?

Well, were TG, and though we were pretty certain on what our girl name would be we went in with a few backups that met all of our criteria, and decided to decide once we met her. Our boy name was harder because there was really only one name that we could both agree on...luckily we thought it suited him when h was born, and suits him now

Friends of our announced a name shortly before the baby arrived.. and then changed it after she was born. It was a bit awkward because we were all messaging her like "CONGRATS ON BABY A" and later she announced WELCOME BABY B". If you don't plan on telling anyone I don't think it is a big deal.

We had a short list, but decided to wait on selecting the name until we met LO. Good thing we did since she was definitely not either of the names we had on our list!! We went back to the drawing board to find the name that truly fit her.

My husband's name was going to be Justin, until he was born, and they decided to name him after his dad. Last minute change!

I hav a friend who changed her daughter's name one year after she was born! She said the name just didn't feel right...

I have a FB friend that just changed her sons name a few days after birth. She said they just didn't love the name and it didn't fit him. In the long run it's good to do but it's probably a pain to spread the word.

Not so much after the baby arrived but I'm 39 weeks today and we just scrapped our name choices (we're TG) and are starting over from scratch. We decided we didn't like either of the names we'd chosen and are now trawling through name lists again!
We did that with our first LO as well, but only with the boy names. Fortunately she ended up being a girl, which was the one name we unequivocally loved!

@Reese: i agree.
If you think this may be possible, don't share your name choice with people. I've had friends say baby's name was "X" all throughout their pregnancy, and then after the birth, they name him "Y" instead. It is always really confusing and then the parents feel the need to explain the change and blablabla.

@CupQuakeWalk: Hahaha this is why I don't share names with people. Even though I know I wont change it, some people get so hung up on baby names!!!

We were team green and went in with a couple names for each gender and decided when we met her.

We were thinking we would name the boys Elliot & Oliver, but we wanted to wait to see them and see if Oliver would fit because we just weren't really sold on it. We went with Finn instead when we met him. He just wasn't an Oliver!
ETA: I definitely second not telling anyone the potential name. I still have an ex-boss, who's father's name was Oliver, that comments on how we didn't use that!

@Mrs. Blue: Oh my gosh, that would've been so close to Elliot and Olivia... the OG team from Law & Order SVU!!
ETA: Oh my goodness, I just realized that Fin is also an SVU detective!! The spelling is a bit different, but it's still awesome.

We picked DD's name before she was born but we didn't announce it. In the delivery room I thought I made a mistake because it didn't fit her. A month or so in I couldn't believe I second guessed myself. She totally matches her name.

We weren't totally sold on her name, but we had decided on naming her Rose but were going to wait until we saw her to "give" her that name and announce to others. Then when she arrived we sat on it for a couple of days before deciding it just didn't suit her. So revisited some of our other contenders and ended up calling her Sophie Rose.

We decided from the start to walk in with a few name possibilities and then to wait until we see the baby. Sometimes, this decision feels kind of silly--a baby's looks change so much, so quickly. He could look like one thing at birth and another thing by the time he's five. But my SO really wants the name to make emotional sense to him whereas I'm a little more objective about it (i.e., Do I like the name? Does it follow all the naming "rules" I care about?). Seeing the baby will help him connect the name to the person emotionally, I think.
All that being said, when I got my 4D u/s photos this week, they captured Baby's facial features in a remarkable way--even the techs were quite impressed that we got those shots. A lot will change in the next 18 weeks, but it did make feel as if some of the names we have thought of were a better match than others because I got a close look at his face. Ha. So in an effort to avoid making a name change after the birth, we're waiting for certain.

If we had a boy I wanted to name him Jordan. It took my husband all of 5 minutes to realize I was on a MSCL binge and he vetoed my 90s name..

@Mrs. Jump Rope: No, we didn't realize, even though we both watch SVU. Finn was a late contender, so we didn't research it out as much. We've only had a couple people notice and comment on the SVU combo.

We had 95% decided on a name... we hadn't told anyone what it was except for HB. I even made up his name to go on his wall. When he was born we decided our runner up name suited him better so we went with that! I fixed the name on his wall pretty quick too

@Mrs. Blue: Finn is an awesome name. I've only heard it once before -- my moms neighbors grandsons are Sawyer and Finn!

We're going in to delivery with two contenders for each sex and we have top names for each as well. I'm wavering right now on the top girl name so I'm glad that we are waiting until we see the baby to decide (and that we didn't tell anyone our choices)!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: That's what DH wanted! I vetoed because I think it's a little too much, even though I love Tom Sawyer. Plus, I don't like it with our last name.

This is a very real fear of mine! It's the biggest reason why we're waiting to share the name we have picked out. I'm just superstitious enough that I feel like I'll jinx it somehow to share it first, and then we'll meet him and he won't fit that name.

We ended up having a boy and our top name choice was Everett but I knew immediately when I saw him that it wasn't the right name and ended up picking a name that we had never discussed before!! So you really have to go into it with an open mind

@Mrs. Jump Rope: We ended up using the name of a main character in Grey's Anatomy....it wasn't until we submitted the paperwork that I admitted to DH that that is where I got the idea of the name from. I had been on a HUGE grey's kick while on bed rest

I felt weird for the first couple days saying both of our daughters' names. I could see wanting to change them at that point...
But we hung in there and after a few weeks, we couldn't imagine them being anything else!
(I think it was tough in our case because we chose such big names).
