My pediatrician suspects LO has intussusception. I did not even know what is was until yesterday... Has anyone here had a child experience this? If so, how did the symptoms start? How was it treated?
Thank you!

Wait, the pediatrician suspects intussusception based on what? Was this acute? Did they send you to the ER? Kids usually have acute onset abdominal pain and they'll draw their knees up to their chest. They also have bloody poops that look like currant jelly.
Usually this is treated with an "air enema" under x-ray guidance with a surgeon present.

@espion: LO screams out in pain out of nowhere. It's been happening for a few days. He doesn't have a fever or bloody poop but it is a mucusy. The X-rays were normal and blood tests showed everything is fine. But the doctor still wants to do an ultrasound on his belly just to be sure..

@Blueberry: The best time to do the ultrasound (as horrible as it may sound) is when your LO is hurting. Bowels can telescope in and out and make it seem like nothing is wrong.

I've never had experience with it in children, but in the hospital when we have patients with intussuscpetion, it's an emergent procedure. I've had patients with no symptoms except constipation and abdominal discomfort and I've had patients with bloody diarrhea and horrible, horrible pain. Just like @Espion: said, it's usually treated with an air enema.

DS2 has had surgery for NEC, where part of the bowel has died. Sounds similar. Wall me if you want to talk. He got it when he was 3 months old (1 month adjusted) which is very rare. Also started with mucusy, bloody poop which turned into a very sick, grunting baby within 12 hours, had emergency surgery in less than 24. Is your LO admitted in the PICU? Wishing you the best.

@espion: @mrs.panda: @beaker: thank you all for your replies! LO had a belly ultrasound today and it was clear. The doctor said I still need to watch him closely because a clear ultrasound doesn't can't completely rule out intussusception. We literally spent all day at the hospital. I am exhausted! I just want my son to be okay and I hate not knowing what is wrong with him when he's in pain. Thanks again ladies
I appreciate it!

My son had it a couple of times. He's had it treated by both air enema and contrast. In one case, we were pretty sure he was having it because he presented the same way, but the ultrasound was clear. The theory was that it resolved itself. If you suspect it again, just go the ER, tell them he has a history of it and they should rush you to get an ultrasound pretty quickly. Good luck!
