I didn't even know there was such a thing! But I say if your not comfortable doing it yourself or don't have the means (in the case of your stairs) hiring a pro who knows their stuff when LO's safety is concerned is warranted. Hopefully they will have a good solution and won't just suggest replacing the railing so it's to code (side note: my brother did get his head stuck in a railing back in the day. My parents took it out and put a half wall instead but recently redid that room and put the railing back, to code lol).

So does the company come licensed and bonded? I would think that any company that is making something structurally different would have to carry insurance in the case that something that they did resulted in something happening. It's not something that I would be at all comfortable with and personally I would rather hire a contractor to just fix the stair rail/issue to code.

Is your husband handy?
In the scenario you talked about I would add carpet to the stairs or tread protectors (can't think of the exact name right now). As for the railing you can always go to Lowes and buy new balusters and replace your railing yourself.

I guess if your husband is handy I don't see the point of hiring a "childproofer" to come in.

I would probably try to find a contractor to fix the issue the right way if the plexiglass is that complicated. Plus, you have to remember that the babyproofing company makes money off your fear so they're going to point of every.single.little.thing and take it to the extreme because the more they scare you, the more money you spend, the more money they make. Sometimes with companies like that you have to listen to their advice and then wait awhile to act so you aren't acting out of fear and emotion and instead thinking practically. (not saying that you're acting irrationally AT ALL! Just reminding you of how those companies work.)

@banana: yes, i hired one! we put plexiglass on our stairs but i can't remember how much it was as we did it over a year ago. he cut it all to fit so we didn't think that we could do it ourselves. we feel like it was worth the expense but it certainly was not $3k!

@banana: yes, we felt like it was worth it for the plexiglass. we have dangerous wooden stairs, too. he came in and did a full evaluation of the house but all we did were gates at our stairs and the plexiglass. there was no pressure to do the other stuff.

I've never heard of them either.
