I have an all day conference in the city in 2 weeks and just got the day-of schedule. There are 2 breaks that I can pump but it would mean that I need to pump on the train for my 1st morning pump. I totally do not care and will use my nursing cover but I imagine it'd be awkward in a quiet train and hearing my motor going... haha.

I did once, but it was Amtrak and it was a sleeper train (although I was only going for a small portion of the route). There was a changing compartment that I grabbed so I could spread out comfortably -- I felt super lucky about that. I wouldn't worry too much about the sound, though, the train itself is pretty loud so I think it will cover up a lot of it.

I sat next to a lady go pumped on an airplane. No one noticed (though an airplane is pretty loud)

I pumped on an airplane once. But it is loud on the plane so you can't hear! Oh, haha, ditto @MamaBehr:
Depending on the train it could be really quiet, find a spot away from people or find a loud car!

I pumped on a train (and a plane) once - I kind of moved the pump to the bottom of my bag and put some stuff over so it wasn't as loud. Don't sit in the quiet car and you should be fine!

Yikes! Do you have any other options, like is it a train with bathrooms? Or can you get where you're going 15 minutes early and pump in a bathroom there? Where I live there are enough sketchy people on the trains that I'd never ever do anything that might have them staring at me. Had to pump in quite a few public bathrooms though... they can be gross but at least there's a door and it usually locks.

I pumped on an amtrak train. Was with older male coworkers so i couldn't do it in my seat. I did it in the bathroom and it was gross but i brought one of those chux pads that they give you in the hospital and put all of my pump parts on it and didn't let them touch any surface in the bathroom. I also stood up the entire time and then used purell right before touching my pump parts. Doable, kind of gross but necessary.

@SleepyMonkey: i did the same thing in an airplane bathroom (used one of my dogs' (unused!) potty pads) and stood the whole time.

I wouldn't worry about it. You may get some strange looks but people do much more weird things on planes/trains I'm sure!
Maybe bring a jacket to kinda cover up the pump for noise reduction?

@Beehive: That's a good idea, I should try to stuff it in the bag with things over it to test how audible it is!
@Mama Bird: I never even gave thought to do it in the bathroom... I rather just be stared at out in the open lol! It is possible that I might just skip that pump. I mean it's just a commuter train and nothing sketchy happens.
@SleepyMonkey: Ugh yea exactly, gross but I would do that too if I MUST.
@edelweiss: oh yeah! I have tons of those pads for both my dog and baby. I'd cover the entire bathroom in it hahaha and purell/lysol the heck out of everything!
@T.H.O.U.: Yeah I was just going to pump underneath my nursing cover. But then I wonder what do I do when I'm done? Maybe I'll just sit like that the whole time until people leave? Haha!

I've done on a plane a few times and in the bathroom of the plane. The most awkward time was putting everything away, but my seat mates either didn't notice or pretended not to. You definitely couldn't hear it. Good luck!

Yep! I know lots of ms who have too. It's not noticeable at all. The train is louder tha you think!

@catomd00: I only commute a handful of times a year so I can't remember haha. I just know it's usually so quiet and people barely move that I felt awkward to even eat breakfast sometimes haha!

I am going back to work in the fall and will probably need to pump on the train on the way in and the way home. It is a commuter train and an hour ride each way. Hopefully I can just use a cover and not sit on the quiet car and it should be ok. Let us know how it goes if you end up doing it.

@mrswin: I will! And I think I prefer getting weird looks than going into the bathroom, especially in a moving train, what if I/my stuff lost balance and touch the floor

@mrswin: I am pumping on the train! A woman sat next to me and she just had sunglasses on and not looking.
It was a lil hard maneuvering all the stuff under my nursing cover in a seat but I managed! And the motor sound is def not as loud as I think... I think only I can really hear it.
Now the trick is how to put back everything including the milk! I'm so proud of myself! I really thought of not doing it and just skipping one pump but I might have 15 min max to set up and pump for the rest of the day so..

@snowjewelz: Way to go! This inspires me. I'm going to a conference across the country in November (ha 6 months from now) and I'm already scared about pumping anywhere and everywhere I have to! I should practice pumping in public a little just to get over the initial fear

@Kbee: to me losing supply and not getting my days worth for the next day is much more concerning than any public fear! As I'm typing this I'm sitting in the conference in my spot pumping publicly (cover on of course). Most of these people I will never see again anyway! You can def do it!
