We had to schedule an MRI for DS today and I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a little one who's had one? We have like a month to wait for it, so that stinks, but I'm nervous about the sedation and the scan in general. I guess I'm just looking for support. Thanks!

How old is your LO? My DD had one at around 6 months and it went fine. The only thing that was difficult was not being able to feed her for a certain number of hours beforehand. I was really scared about the sedation but she did fine. And she was so young that she wasn't scared or confused or anything. She just rolled with it. If you are nervous you might try calling and talking with the anesthesiologist who will be doing it. That's what I did and it did make me feel a lot better about the whole thing. He talked me through the process and reassured me quite a bit.

My LO hasn't had an MRI specifically, but she's had several test where she's had to be sedated. How old will he be? The younger the easier, it's gotten harder as she's gotten older (she hates having her IV wrapped up and freaks out when she comes out of sedation because of it.) Otherwise she handles it very well, the no drinking is our biggest battle, I would try to get the earliest scan as possible. We always do right in the morning, so we take her to the hospital in her PJs (no diaper change even) and hope she falls back asleep for the 45 minute drive there.
Also, bring snacks/drink/his sippy cup for after (but hid it until he's back in the room and able to have it)
Bring his lovey, favorite stuffed animal, favorite movie/ipad ect, anything to keep him calm and feeling comfortable, they let her take it back with her.
We've used the same anesthesiologist for almost all of hers (she's been under 4 times now at 2 1/2) so we trust him and they actually take her from us awake and bring us back awake (sleepy but awake.) This is way easier on me so she doesn't seem me stress out and cry (I cry every time they take her.) This is the hospital policy, not sure if that's how it is everywhere.

T had one at 5.5 months. The sedation risks they go over really scared me, so I worried the whole time, but he didn't have any complications. They sedated him using Propofol. They let him fall asleep in our arms first and then administered it through his IV port (he was hospitalized at the time). They said it would burn but he would be out before he noticed it. He jerked his hand and then went back to sleep. Luckily they only gave him a small amount just to keep him asleep. It went well.
We didn't get to see him until he woke up. He woke up groggy but pretty happy. Hospitals are terrible for napping and he was needing that deep sleep badly! Lol
The whole process from sedation to him waking up was just 45 minutes.

@regberadaisy: I don't know if you recall our whole vomiting/diahrrea nightmare last year, but they treated him for parasites even though we couldn't find any in his stool. Well it showed back up a few weeks ago and because his vomiting is solely at night in a similar pattern, his specialist wants to rule out worst case scenerios (aka tumors or epilepsy) with an MRI. Still praying it's just a parasite we can't seem to identify, which means we can't effectivtly treat.

My littles haven't, but I did when I was 5. It was totally fine. All I remember is being asked to lay still, and my mom holding my hand while I layed there. Your LO will be just fine

We're also hopefully ruling out tumor, epilepsy, etc. I hope your little guy's MRI goes well and that everything is okay with him! Aside from the restrictions on eating and drinking ahead of time, I'm at a complete loss as to how to prepare her for anesthesia. Anyone have any tips for how to talk about it with a 3 year old? @Mrs. Jacks: Do you happen to know of any resources I should check?

@owlmom: if you are going to a regional children's hospital, ask to speak to child life and they'll make an appointment with you and your toddler to talk about it and maybe make a medical doll who goes through an MRI as a rehersal for the real thing.

@BananaPancakes: @owlmom: my LO did one but it was at 8 weeks old (40w gestation) so very different. I 2nd the medical doll through Child Life or watching a video if you can find a non-scary one on youtube. Good luck to you both, I hope they show no problems!
