It's pretty obvious how women might need to make sacrifices at work post-baby: pay cuts, reduced hours, quitting. But what about the men? Has your DH had to change anything?

nope, no changes on his part work-wise, while i've made a lot. it is a bit frustrating sometimes that it feels unfair. but, his job is pretty tough anyway and has worse hours and commute than mine so i can't really complain.

Now if I'm sick, dh has to take off of work to take care of lo.

Not really. Well, he's taken a contract that requires travel. He'd much rather stay at home with us but needs to bring in the $$$

@chopsuey119: I think I'd rather be poor. I don't know how you do it with him gone all the time!

@artbee: It was REALLY tough in the beginning, but it's not too bad. He leaves late on Monday night and comes home at 8am Thursday morning! Gone 2.5 days, home pretty much all day the rest of the week.

@chopsuey119: DH is starting to have to come home a half an hour later and I'm even dreading just that short amount of time!

@artbee: Yeah I feel ya! I miss DH when he's gone, but I like that he doesn't have a typical 8-5 gig. The traveling is over next month, so I'm excited!

It definitely affects his hours. Pre-baby, both DH and I would often be at the office for a really long time every day- he would spend two hours (including shower and transit time) at the gym, and I'd often run errands or go the gym or screw around somewhere near my office for an hour or two after work till traffic died down. Now, one of us has to do baby drop-off, and the other has to pick up, and so most days we just do our 8 hours and then get out of there.
DH also has the more flexible schedule of the two of us (he has to work 80 hours over two weeks, and tries to be there during core hours daily, but otherwise can pick his hours and make up time on weekends if he wants), so anytime LO has a special need (needs to be picked up early, is off sick, has a doctor appointment), that usually falls on DH.

@chopsuey119: Yay- I didn't realize it was only temporary. That's awesome!

We try to share sick days for DD so we'll talk about who can miss work or who NEEDS to be there and decide who will stay home.
Until last August I was doing all the pick up & drop off duties for daycare so unless DD was sick, he really didn't have to change anything. Now he drops off & I pick up and that's been a lot better for me.

He'll be getting started earlier in the morning (and dropping LO off at daycare) and hopefully the majority of the time wrapping up his day by 5:30 so he can be home for some family time in the evening. Right now there are a lot of nights where he doesn't even leave the office until after 7 and it can be close to 8 when he gets home. I'll be leaving work at 4 to pick up LO, but I don't want to be a solo parent for all the dinner/bath/bed routine every night.

No, but that's because I am staying at home...if I did return, he would have had to reduce to 4 days a week to accomodate the day care drop off/pickups.

Not any long term sacrifices, but he did work a few 1/2 days to be able to go to dr appts and such. And he has left work for me to help before. I am pretty much stay at home though (I work 2 night shifts a week), so he doesn't really have to.

He currently works a 4 day week. He wants to be there for our little girl, though so he is moving that to a 5 day week so he can be home for dinner and bedtime for her.

@mamabolt: @mediagirl: That is great that your DHs can change schedules and come home earlier! DH comes home early on Fridays post baby but that is about all he can swing.

@Andrea: yeah, it's really, really nice. He works so far away, he still won't get home until 5 but at least that's earlier than 7!
He told me last night that since BGH is probably our only one, he doesn't want to miss a minute of her life if he can help it. Brought me to tears.

@mediagirl: dang! He is so sweet! I need to show this to DH. Just kidding! I know it would really hurt DH's career to come home early all the time so I don't expect him to leave early anyway.
