I'm so glad the humidity is gone because DD's eczema has all but cleared up! It is so bad during the summer. I've tried many different creams/lotions, including prescription ones, but I think her eczema is just tied to the weather.

Awww... poor baby! I can't relate as a mom (yet), but I CAN relate to having had eczema my whole.entire.life.
The recent heat wave we had + abnormal humidity + pregnancy has made the last month quite UNBEARABLE for my eczema - which has flared-up worse than it has in years.
Some tips I've learned to manage my eczema over the years (minus prescription meds, which are not allowed during pregnancy):
- Short, warm showers/baths only. Not too hot (although I love it!). Use as little as soap, if any, as possible. Especially for a baby, I don't think "soaps" are really all that necessary.
* My fave body wash is the Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy one.
- In general, I LOVE the Aveeno Baby skincare line. The Soothing Relief Moisture Cream is my salvation during dry, winter months. It's better than the adult "eczema" line. I even use it on my face.
- Don't scrub (well, this is more for when he/she grows older). I love to scrub, but it irritates the skin. Pat dry with towels only. I just hang out in a bathrobe for a few min.
- Especially for babies/kids (as this was MY major problem as a youth), keep ALL crevice/fold areas DRY in the humidity AND moisturized when it's dry. It's such a catch 20, but anywhere that would get slightly sweaty would result in horrible rashes. And then if it gets dry, itchy too. I think there are some cornstarch powders that help.
*Sorry so long, but I could seriously write a book on this topic. It runs in my family, but I've had it the worst, followed by cousin's baby. DH says our poor baby probably has eczema in-utero already. HTH

I just found out my son is allergic to nuts! Never knew! Glad I found out what was causing his eczema and allergic reactions. We started eliminating all nutty foods and his eczema is SO much better! Not sure if it's related to weather or not. Maybe?

@shopaholic: yeah eczema is really horrible! I am not sure where DD got it from because it doesn't run in the family. She is 2.5 years old so I have tried all of the above. I hear that some people do grow out of it so I am crossing my fingers!
@banana: DD is allergic to nuts, too! Apparently people with eczema are also prone to nut allergies. Glad his skin is better, too!!

i do think the heat would cause the eczema to crop up more easily. i suffered from it, and my 2 year old suffers from it esp on her knees and upper arms. while it is under control for the most part, especially if I can coverit up with long sleeve shirts and pants; when her skin is exposed, she has a tendency to scratch, which as you all know will cause eczema to get worse or flare up more. i'll also apply aquafor, which helps to keep her skin moisturized. my DD has an egg allergy, but she just has super sensitive skin too.
i feel all your pain, it's so hard seeing our little ones itchy

Oh! And I forgot to mention my lifesavers this month w/out medication:
- Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream all-over
- Eucerin Original Moisturizing Creme at night or when I don't go out. This is the most moisture-sealing creme, but it makes you kind of sweat.
- Cotton clothing.

@andrea - I don't know how many people actually "outgrow it". I do know that by my 20s and taking care of myself, I was MUCH better able to manage and control the eczema and flare-ups.
@kakimochi - Yup, had them something terrible on arms and knees as a kid! Definitely keeping them covered is a method of control! I almost always have to have my elbows covered. I can't put them on tables or I know I will get itchy (hence a HUGE collection of cardigans).

@shopaholic: maybe just learning not to scratch it helps. I always tell DD not to scratch because she makes herself bleed but she's too young to control herself yet.

LOL... true, true. Scratching is still a terrible obstacle for me! I scratch unconsciously and DH says I always scratch in my sleep too. I need some baby mittens for myself too!
