I stepped out of my comfort zone last night and went! I am super shy but I wanted to get out of the house, and bf'ing has been a huge challenge for us.
It was awesome! The meeting topic was common problems and difficulties with breastfeeding, so it was exactly what I needed. Afterward an LC stayed and helped me work on latching. I'm so happy I went!

We have a local breastfeeding group in my area.... I'm pretty nervous about attending when my time comes so interested in others' experiences.

I had such issues with my son that I am thinking of going to one of these meetings before this baby comes. Where there women there who hadn't had their babies yet? It is nice to hear how wonderful the experience was!

@MamaBehr: Yes, the group was about 1/4 pregnant women and the leaders addressed all their questions and did a special segment for them too. I wish I would've gone while I was pregnant!

I didn't but I did go to a mommy group at my hospital. It wasn't solely breastfeeding support but there were lactation consultants there to answer questions and offer support. I'm really glad I went. It was actually my gateway into nursing in public. It was a judgement free zone and there were people willing to help us get positioned comfortably. It helped me realize how easy it was to get LO into a nursing position someplace other than our couch and it helped me work on different strategies for coverage (and to see that there wasn't really much exposed).
I highly recommend going to some kind of group to talk to people who are "in the trenches" and experiencing what you're experiencing. I found that even friends with toddlers have forgotten what those early days are like. The first time I went, it was in the middle of LO's six week growth spurt and I was convinced LO hated me. Hearing others say their LO was doing the exact same thing made me feel better.
I just can't say enough about how awesome it was to be involved in some kind of group!

@grizz: we just hit the 3 month and while we're not having the popping off and screaming bloody murder part, he certainly doesn't want to be far from the boob for more than a brief moment. He was nursing with a fist up in the air, looking awfully victorious, lol.

I went mostly hoping to meet other moms sine we just moved here.... No one else came except the lady running it and she basically trapped me and told me her life story and about her grandkids. I spent an hour trying to tactfully leave and finally just faked a phone call and walked out

I went off and on for a while. I truly believe who is in the group makes a HUGE difference. Everyone here is stay at home moms (Thursday morning meeting).

@brownie: I can see where that would make a huge difference! We have two in town and I'm guessing one is mostly SAHMs (meets on Thurs mornings) and the one I went to was a good mix.

I've been to two LLL meetings and was surprised to see the wide variety of breastfeeding experiences present. We had women who mixed feed, women who have fed exclusively with donor milk whilst donating themselves due to latch issues, a mother with a baby with cleft lip who breastfed and supplemented with donor milk and funnily enough only two or three of us who were EBF!

My hospital has a free breastfeeding support group that met 3 times a week. I went a couple times a week through my 12 week leave. I loved it!

I went when pregnant and it was good to hear a lot of different viewpoints but I think the group by me was much more AP than I am so I wouldn't be able to relate. I did go to a BFing support group put on by my hospital (it's designated baby friendly) after LO arrived though that was fantastic! I think any kind of support group is great to go to!

My birth center provides new mom and breastfeeding support groups, that I will likely check out after the baby is born. However, I know a wonderful woman who works for LLL, so I'm definitely interested in checking it out. I'm so glad you have a positive experience!

I have been going every month since I was 6 months pregnant with W (who is now 15 months old). I love my LLL friends and I actually like having the experience going from a pregnant FTM just absorbing as much as possible to a new mom asking a bazillion questions to a seasoned breastfeeder sharing my experiences. And now the cycle starts again since I'm pregnant, still breastfeeding, and fully intend to tandem nurse which are obviously all new experiences for me!

My hospital runs a twice a month breastfeeding support group with a L&D nurse/LC. I have been going since 5 months, even though we didn't have many issues. Now that P is 14 months I like to give some normalcy to toddler breastfeeding. It's really a great group for support and socialization!
