As I mentioned in another post one of my co-workers lost his daughter this week. I have been asking around at work to see if anyone knows if we can donate PTO/sick time to the co-worker. I've heard of it being done other places but I don't know any details.
Have you done it or does your company do it? What are the limitations? (PTO but not sick time? Does it matter if you make less than the employee you donate to?)

The federal govt has an official system, although it's not used much.

@Corduroy: We do not have an official policy on this at our office and fortunately have never had a situation come up where this was suggested. I hope your company will be willing to do something

@Mrs. Tiger: My dad, a fed, donated a month of PTO to his assistant when she had a baby in the NICU which is what made me think of it initially. My impression is that the government is behind on this kind of thing but maybe not in this case.

We can donate PTO at our company. We only have PTO, no separate sick leave. We can donate as much as we like, regardless of salary/rank differences.

@Mrs. Tiger: it's used a lot at my agency! I've just never had enough accrued annual leave to do it (was saving up for maternity leave and then blew through it after DD was born).

I have - I worked in a small firm so it was easy. I was also able to do her job when she was out so it wasn't doing anyone a disservice.

It never came up until one of ours lost her husband unexpectedly so HR created a new policy so that we were able to donate to her! It was at my old company.

We have a medical leave bank, you pay leave "dues" once a year that go into a big pot, and then you can apply to use it for various emergencies. I got 750 hours after D's birth, which is the max allowed! @Corduroy: I don't know any company that would have been as generous as the good old USG!

We can do it at my company, but it goes into this huge pool and you don't get to specifically pick who that PTO goes to.

In my school district you can opt to donate a sick day to the sick leave bank. You then can use the sick leave bank if you run out of sick days, something like 10 extra days (not sure how many.)
If you have a significant need / unique situation, you can submit an explanation and an additional leave request, and an email goes out to all the sick leave members asking them to donate a day or 2 to that specific individual. This only happens maybe once or twice a year. If more days are contributed than what is needed, the days get returned.
