Lol no, BUT I teach 8th grade is history and government and the kids always know the Miranda rights! I love teaching especially the bill of rights and how they apply. I have seen several of my students get arrested, unfortunately!

Fact: I wasn't even sure if we had Miranda rights (or the Canadian equivalent) in Canada until I googled it. It turns out we do have our own version.

I have! We weren't arrested but detained and read our Miranda rights. It's a crazy story involving me and DH (though we weren't married at the time it happened). We were staying at his family's cabin in the White Mountains in Arizona and were woken up by a SWAT team at about 9 or 10 PM. They had these gigantic guns, bulletproof vests, and were yelling at us to come out with our hands up. They made us come outside, lie down on the deck, and then they handcuffed (!!) us, all without telling us what the hell was going on. They also ran into the cabin as if they were looking for something and kept asking if there was another person there.

Then, they separated us, and I heard them read DH his Miranda rights. I'm a lawyer and I thought, for a brief second, to tell him to not say anything. But then I thought better of it because 1) we didn't do anything wrong; 2) we were in the middle of nowhere and going to the police station would have taken a few hours and we were supposed to leave the next day; and 3) police officers generally don't seem to like lawyers! Then I was read my Miranda rights. So crazy! And I did answer their questions, but thought carefully about the answers, though I was still pretty shaken up.

Turned out that they were tracking a burglar from a nearby ranch and their bloodhound led them to the cabin. Clearly was not us. The suspect was blond with facial hair and short; DH is 6 feet, has brown hair, and no facial hair. They apologized and asked for our help. Then later I had to finish off the bottle of wine we had before going back to sleep.

Ha, I have but it was in Italy. No Miranda rights!

No. And as a lawyer, I would not speak while unrepresented.

@RunsYellowLights: So you have *convictions* but no *priors* . . .

@MrsBells: Innocence has nothing to do with *needing* an attorney. Having an attorney present is a game changer, and can considerably alter the course of events (for the better, in your favor). So don't hesitate to *lawyer up!*

Whatever the Canadian equivalent is, I've heard em. I shop lifted from a mall when I was 14. Never arrested but I was threatened with community service! I guess I looked pretty scared because they never followed through with that. Was banned from the mall for 2 years and never ever stole and would never again! For the record of morality, it was peer pressure.

Not arrested or read my rights, but I did get a disorderly conduct charge in college. My friends and I were feeling a little reckless and had a silly night of stealing real estate signs and throwing them on my ex-boyfriend's front lawn. We also forked a friend's lawn and teepee'd another friend's car. But totally clean record as of 2000.

Yes and no.
When I was 17 I was walking along the train tracks with two friends and a police officer saw us and yelled for us to get down from the tracks. We did without hesitation, he came over to us, asked our names, where we lived, our ssn (I didn't know mine, I never used it!). He told us told us to get lost and left. We continued on our way, away from the tracks, and went home.
A month letter my mother gets a letter for me from the courthouse that says "Upon your arrest September 22.." She flips out, asks why I didn't tell her, etc. I told her exactly what happened, we were walking along the tracks, we were asked our names and told to get away from the railroad tracks and bridge. He never said we were arrested, didn't take us anywhere, didn't give a ticket (? do they do that? haha). Nothing.
I had to appear in court or it would go on my permanent record that I was arrested for : trespassing on federal property! Imagine??
I was given community service (at the senior center where the kind old ladies made me cupcakes and couldn't believe that that happened) and I got the hell out of that town as fast as I could!

I have been arrested, I was not read my Miranda rights. There were MAJOR lapses in authority and judgment during my ordeal. My record was subsequently expunged.

My arrest, which is WAY too long and detailed to go into here, has actually been under litigation for more than 10 years. If you are interested, google washington dc pershing park mass arrests.

No but I would have rather been arrested than my parents find out:

Freshman year, my friends and I went to this club and got in. We didn't have fake IDs (I've never had one) but they let us in, let us drink, etc and we totally tried to stumble home.

Of course the cops are in the parking lot and of course it's my cousin who is on duty and he grabs me & my one friend and says he's telling my dad. Fabous.

My dad is incredibly over protective. I'm 29 and he still is. Imagine him when I was 18!

I begged cousin to give me an underage and not call my dad but nope, he called daddy.

Friend & I were in the most trouble of our lives. She went on to be in my wedding party & my parents still like her, though!

On a semi-related note, it drives me NUTS on some of those shows--the airport one (where they catch people at customs) comes to mind--where they read people their rights, start questioning them, and then basically lead them on to think that if they "just work with them the whole thing will be over a lot sooner and quicker" and basically "trick" them into talking...

Nope and nope. As an attorney I would lawyer up.

I was! In college, my boyfriend at the time and I drove down to Disneyland and arrived at 4 am. Our hotel room wouldn't be ready for check in until that afternoon so we parked in the parking lot and tried to catch a few hours of shut eye before spending the day at the park.

At about 5:30 am, we awoke to find our car surrounded by cops with billy clubs and flashlights. We were arrested for trespassing and toyed with the idea of not saying anything... But after all I their over the top ridiculousness, I simply said, "you know we are hotel guests, right?"

Once they confirmed that we were indeed guests for that day, they quickly released us.

The boyfriend at the time had the foresight to say, "um, so if you aren't going to be using those mugshots, we'd really like to have them". They did us one better and took a picture of the two of us together as well.

So now I have a mugshot picture of myself and an ex from the police.

@lemong: OMG almost the same thing happened to me! I was renting a garage apartment for a couple of months after college and woke up one night to a crazy bright light being shined in at me in bed and police on the bullhorn telling me I was surrounded and to come out with my hands up or they were sending in the dogs!!! I had a little min-pin puppy at the time and was freaking out that they were going to send in dogs and kill my puppy! I was in such a panic and not lucid, having been woken up. I finally made it to the door and opened it and they come rushing in to find someone who clearly wasn't there. Turns out, I knew one of the officers, oddly enough (it was not a small town), so they never got as far as cuffing me. Scared the s#!t out of me though.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Something similar happened to me when I was freshman at Drexel in Philly. I was parked at a normal meter and when I got up to leave the next day my car wasnt where I left it and there were "No Parking" signs on the meters. I assumed the worst, that my car was stolen, so after calling my parents we called the cops. they came too a report and had me get in the back of the cop car in front of my dorm (it was mortifying) and we drove like 6 blocks and there was my car in front of one of the frat houses with a note from the PPA that it was "relocated." They just up and moved my car in the middle of the night, it was crazy! I never would have found it on my own.
