I've had a bunch of emails about class action lawsuits. I usually just ignore them.
Have you ever been involved in a class action lawsuit?

i havent but my sister was. well unknowingly....
she received papers in the mall at the beginning of the year, she never did anything with them because she thought you had to sign something to be part of the case. Well about 8-9 months later she got a check in the mail for almost $5k...she was shocked...

same as you - I've had several emails about them but never really do anything.

@MrsCastro: whoa! Nice!
I thought you had to sign or do something to opt in on a lawsuit.

@bluestriped bee: I once read all the fine print on a recent one and it said to opt in, "do nothing". I wasn't going to do anything anyway to be honest because I was worried about graduating grad school, lol!
@MrsCastro: dayum! I need some good luck!

@bluestriped bee: @sorrycharlie: she thought she didnt have to sign anything, but you had to actually sign to opt out...she was scared to cash the check after...it took her awhile but she eventually did...

I always do them. I'm quite experienced filling these forms out because I have to do them for clients when there is a class action suit regarding a stock or mutual fund : ). Hubs worked at Walmart in high school and he once got about $500 from a suit against them. Even if it's only $20 bucks to me it's worth the 5 minutes it takes me to complete the forms.

@MamaMoose: I'm always afraid that I'll have to pay legal fees or something they don't tell me about. I'm always afraid of legal speak. Makes me nervous. But good to know.

@MrsCastro: yeah, I think I would sit on the check for a couple months just to make sure.

I was asked to be in one and I totally should have but at the time I was scared of what might be on my record and I was about to start applying for 'real' jobs, so I never filled out the paperwork.

I'm automatically included in one against Bank of America but I have no clue where it stands.

Typically you opt out of class action lawsuits and settlements. That is because the class typically encompasses a broad range of people and as part of the settlement they usually have some provisions saying that you are not allowed to pursue any further legal action on that issue. Therefore if you want to still sue, you need to opt out. The legal fees are all paid out of the settlement.
But I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice
