..... sooooort of? I don't know if it technically counts as being laid off but I did lose my job through no fault of my own. I got a call on a Friday night 3 days before I got induced that the office I worked at was almost certainly shutting down and there would be no job for me to go back to after maternity leave.

I have not, but I had a client who was and he worked for a company that named all of their initiatives. As a result, he received a letter that said "as a result of Project [insert RIDICULOUS name], your employment has been terminated." It appeared the letter was boiler plate and they just sent a wave of them.

Nope but our company does it individual since everyone gets difference severance.
honeydew / 7091 posts
Kind of? I'm still not quite sure what happened. It was in a private meeting. A group meeting would be suuuper awkward!

I was once, years ago and it was private. I can't imagine anyone doing a group lay off notification, that'd be awful!
pomegranate / 3438 posts
I have not but I know my current company does tell people individually.

i haven't been laid off--i was fired. private meeting. it was very traumatic.
squash / 13208 posts
I haven't but our company apparently sucks in that regards - they had a huge layoff and had certain people attend a meeting and they laid off everyone at the meeting - ouch!

@Mamaof2: My friend received a vague meeting request last night for a meeting at 10 today. A few of her other colleagues got the same request....they are kinda nervous!

I have. It was a private "surprise" meeting where they called you into someone's office and told you. A whole bunch of us got let go, but all were told in private meetings.
persimmon / 1304 posts
Nope. Typically when we have layoffs all affected people are told individually (normally spur of the moment/scheduled same day meeting) and then there is a group meeting to let the others know (also normally scheduled only hours in advance).
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Yes, but it was a taskforce reduction so while we were told in private, we knew everyone that was leaving.

Once. In private it was my first job in GA and really took me by surprise!
honeydew / 7295 posts
Both. Once in a meeting with a bunch of coworkers and the other time one on one.

I haven't been laid off but I was once part of a group meeting where all but two of us were let go. It was incredibly awkward.

I've been laid off before. My company had done 3 levels of layoffs. My staff person and I got cut in the 3 level as we were the last ones hired. We were both called into our "boss's" office together and told. There was another person there from another team (not HR) that was there to witness it. Super awkward.

yes. I was told in a private meeting. they basically said, "hey, can I talk to you for a minute?" and took me into the office and explained the situation and took my vest and walked me out. haha. all in a couple minutes.

Yep, I actually got a phone call on a Monday morning as I was getting ready for work from my supervisor saying that the company/building/merchandise was all seized by the bank and not to come in. She had shown up and all the doors were locked. We all thought something wasn't right in the couple weeks leading up to it but the CFO kept telling everyone everything was fine.

Twice! Ugh! Life in the defence industry. Anyhow, the first time was in a private meeting, the second time it was actually a phone call bc I was on mat leave.

Twice The first time my boss pulled me into her office and told me and we shared a box of kleenex before I packed up my things. The second time I got a phone call to let me know I was being laid off at the end of the month. I did hear about a previous round of layoffs where they sent out two different meeting notices which is a horrible way to do it.

Yes, unfortunately. Three times. I work in construction in AZ, and, well... Yeah. The first time the company was actually bought out by a huge builder and we were all given letters in a big meeting with either "We want to hire you on!" or "thanks, but no thanks" basically. The second was privately (another builder that went under, I was in the last batch of layoffs before they closed, so it's not like I didn't see it coming). And the third I was told in my office with another employee in there with us. I was pretty pissed off at that one actually! LOL So I finished payroll and left. My former boss was like "Jen, you don't have to do that, I'll do it" LOL um, no I need to make sure I'm going to get my last paycheck thankyouverymuch.
...sorry for writing a book!

Private meeting with my boss and someone from HR. I caused a scene. It was pretty bad, haha.

I haven't.
There have been a few people here who have been laid off and it was always done in a private meeting.
I honestly cannot picture being let go in a meeting with a ton of people. Sounds incredibly traumatizing!

@Mamaof2: "Laid off. This sucks" was the text that I just received.

@autumnlove: I was laid off on a Friday at 10am as well
I had been initiating meetings with HR for OVER A YEAR because I was afraid that my position wasn't needed and wanted to move elsewhere in the company. They kept leading me on and telling me I was fine, that they'd "do something" sometime soon. Then the recession hit (2008) and I was in the first wave of layoffs.
It was awful. I was bawling my eyes out as I packed up my desk and said goodbye to all my coworkers. I absolutely loved working with them even though my job sucked. Then Wagon Sr. met me for an early lunch and I had three cocktails before the food came.

They announced in a group meeting that they were shutting down the plant and that some people would be laid off that day, some would be laid off in 3 months, and some would keep their jobs but be transferred to a new location. Then they met with each employee individually to notify them which group they were in and discuss severance.
It was pretty awful because it came out of nowhere, but it ended up being better for me because I had been planning on quitting in a few months to move closer to my family and my boyfriend (now DH.) I was one of the 2 people that got laid off that day (but both of us had been pretty open about the fact that we wanted to move back to where we had grown up - i.e. find another job.) ETA - though in my case I was looking for a job in the same city as the US headquarters, so I had framed it as "looking to work in the corporate office."

@autumnlove: So sorry for your friend. Ugh how terrible.
I've never been laid off but I have seen companies do both ways.

I was laid off from my first job out of college after 4 years. I worked from home once a week and the batch layoffs were scheduled for that day, so I was laid off over the phone. I was in such denial, even as my boss was explaining the situation with the layoffs, I thought he was going to tell me whose work I'd need to absorb. I had to go in the next day and pack up my things but I'm glad I had that day before to sob my eyes out at home first so I could hold it together when I went back in.
The HR manager told me that he often runs into people six months later and they say the layoff was the best thing that happened to them in hindsight. I wanted to punch him in the face, but looking back five years later he was totally right. I probably would have stayed at that job all this time, and I'm in a much better job now.

I was called to a meeting and "laid off" from my part time job at a pizza place in highschool. It was a tiny place that just the owners and two employees worked, and they said the owners were just going to work there more to save on wages. However, in retrospect they hired somebody else only a couple weeks later, so unless they grossly underestimated how little they wanted to work there, I suspect I was actually fired.
