Nope. But my BFF has been laid off twice in the last two years. Nightmare.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Yep back in 2009... was laid off due to downsizing; held it together, cried in the car. took two months "off" and got a wfh job , worked that for 3 months, then got offered fulltime and that's where i'm still at today.

Yes, the school I worked at was closed at the end of the 2008-09 school year. I hated my job and was not planning on returning the following year, so I was mostly just thankful that I was eligible for unemployment. It was really hard on the kids, though, and on my coworkers who enjoyed their jobs.

Nope. I've been very fortunate... Especially as someone who works in finance during the recession.

Yes, in January 2009, about a week after we just closed on our new condo in downtown Chicago!! My company cut about 25% of our marketing department... I cried a lot the day it happened, but I hated my job, so the next day I was happy

@regberadaisy: what?!? You got laid off?!! Oh no I remember your post when you were worried about it.
I got laid off in January of 2011.

I had a school choose to not renew my contract for the following year. That made me feel horrid.

@regberadaisy: so sorry this happened to you today. I was laid off in November 2008, right at the beginning of the recession. I was a total mess and was hysterically sobbing saying goodbye to my coworkers. It was so awful and I'm still embarrassed to this day about the way I went out. But it was such a shock.

Yes. The week before my wedding, out of nowhere. Ultimately it was a good thing for my career, but emotionally/psychologically it was the most awful thing I've ever gone through. You have my heartfelt sympathies!

Got laid off in March 2009 due to task force reduction. I thought I'd be laid off again this past month because the company was going into a joint venture, but fortunately, I made the cut and the new company took me on!

@regberadaisy: Yes, in November 2009 due to downsizing. The head of HR said to me that day that he often will run into people in 6 months or a year and they'll tell him how it was a blessing in disguise and they're actually better off than they were before they were laid off. I wanted to punch him in the face for saying that. But now, 3 years later, I have a higher paying, more satisfying job with more opportunity for growth (just got promoted on Monday, actually!) and he was totally right. I hope the same is true for you!

@regberadaisy: Yes! Yesterday! It's totally surreal. I don't think my brain has processed that I'm never going back. I feel like I just have a day off and will be going back as usual next week.
I'm trying to see it as a good thing because I received a generous severance, so I'll get to be home with my LO for at least a few weeks. But I like working and we need two incomes so I'm going to start looking right away. We just bought a house in July (way out of our price range, of course) so money was already tight.

I have. I knew my time was limited but it still didn't soften the blow. They laid me off 1 week after my wedding and a few weeks after my honeymoon. Great timing.

Sorry about your layoff.
I posted this on another thread, but I was laid off as a result of a drop in tourism in NYC after 9/11. I had been at the job for 5 months and hated it, I knew it was the wrong move, but I couldn't just quit. I kept wishing for the summer off and Boom, I got laid off, along with 199 other people! I sobbed as I packed my desk because I had never been laid off before. But as soon as I got outside I was super happy! I didn't start looking for another job until it got cold outside

Yes, it also happened to be in 2009 (not a good year for jobs!) It was pretty horrible. I loved my job so much and I actually worked at the same company as DH. I left in tears (The HR rep was also crying because we were somewhat close), called DH (who was just BF at the time) and let him know we couldn't have lunch together
I'm really sorry you;'re going through this. I know you'll hear it a lot, but I did end up finding a much more rewarding job that I love as well. Best of luck to you!!

@pointybird: I totally agree about feeling like you just have the day off... it took a while to realize that I was never going to go back into that office. Definitely start polishing up that resume and searching for jobs, but also do some of the stuff you never have time for because you're working. One of the perks of being unemployed was getting all my errands done (groceries, laundry, etc) during the week - it made my weekends wide open, and so much more fun.

@regberadaisy: Ugh I am so sorry! I can somewhat understand because I know I am about to be.
I work for the Military, and my Company lost the contract. Praying I can hire on with whoever gets it next.
Did you see it coming? If it was a total surpise I think that would be worse. Boo! I wish you the best!

Yes, three times actually. I work in residential construction and well, we all know how that's been the last few years!
((hugs)) & Good luck. It totally does suck big time.

Oh, I am so sorry you're in this situation. I know you've been worried about it. Hopefully it's just the start of better things to come!

sorry that you have to go through this. in mid 2010, i got the boot, right when i was 6 months pregnant. i was so bummed out that day and quite emotional, and sat in my car for a good 2 hours stunned, since I had to wait for my husband who I carpool with. if i wasn't pregnant, i would have started a job hunt right away, but i was pregnant so we decided to not have me work temporarily.
it did turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as I spent the next 3 months relaxing at home, and then stayed home for another 10 months to care for the baby. we had just enough savings to make a go out of it.

Yes, in January 2009. It was all due to downsizing. I held it together until I got to my car and then I cried. I met my coworker who also got the ax for drinks and we bitched about the situation. My friends got me drunk that night and paid for it. DH and I had just started dating about 4-5 months prior and he got laid off about 4 months later. We actually had a pretty fun summer together.
I was out for 6 months and found the job that I'm at today. It was probably all for the best and I survived but it sucked. I figured it was bound to happen at some point in my life and was happy I was younger.
I'm sorry you're in the situation. Hopefully it turns out to be a good thing for you. As weird as that may sound.

Nope but I have been fired!
I got accused of doing something I absolutely 100% DID NOT DO and boom, I was a goner!
squash / 13764 posts
Yup, I was laid off this past June. It was pretty good timing though--I got to enjoy the summer without worrying about looking for work, since I was 6 mos pregnant at the time. Sorry that you're going through this though!!

I got fired but they use some bogus excuse that wasn't legit. I was happy to be out of there though... even if my self-esteem was shot for a while.

So sorry
I got laid off in November 2010, and it was definitely a blessing in disguise. I wasn't super happy in my job, and it pushed me to go get a better one. Unfortunately we're going through lay offs at my new job now... fingers crossed it doesn't happen again!
