What was it like? I've only ever been to meetup events that aren't affiliated with a church. Should I expect church stuff? There is one in my town that is starting evening, moms only events that I'm interested in.

I joined MOPS for this fall, so I haven't been to a meeting yet, but I'm expecting for there to be some religion. My meetings will even be in a church. My understanding is that the religion isn't that intense though, more like parenting issues, relationship issues, creating mommy friendships.

I go to a MOPs by my house but it's an evening group for working parents. It's hosted by a catholic church, but the lady who runs it is married to a jewish man, so it's not overly religious AT ALL. I was very up front that I am NOT catholic and so far, it's been almost no religion. A prayer at the end of the meeting. A little bit on passover in April for Easter.
I really like it and have gotten a lot out of it. They did a meal train for me when I had T, and I got a babysitting list, along with personal recommendations from the other moms that go to the evening group, because they actually know the girls since they go to church there.
I've always felt very welcomed and not awkward, despite not being Catholic.

@bluestriped bee: Moms of Preschoolers, but at least locally it seems like ages one through just before kindergarten? Following the responses here. I am interested but don't want to be part of a very religious group.

@blackbird: interesting. The one I'm interested is through one of those big churches that don't have a denomination. They are offering the evening program, though so that's why I became interested in it. I'm hoping it's not overly religious...

I have, at a very large, non-denominational christian church. There was hardly any religion, except for the table leader had the option to pray with their table (some did, some didn't) and I think the coloring pages that the kids did that day said something about Jesus. I'm a Christian, so I am okay with any amount of "religious" activity, but even if you're not, it's such an amazing way to meet other moms and laugh and have a good time.

i'm starting one this fall. i was assuming it was pretty spiritually affiliated (is that a word?) since it's through a church, but i guess i'll see come september!

@mediagirl: a friend went to one and she was very uncomfortable, but she is not religious at all. There isn't one around here that does evenings, so I haven't been.

I went to one last year and it was fairly religious. Prayer before brunch, some of the speakers were religious, but some weren't. I got a lot out of it! It was awesome to meet other moms and share our lives a little bit together. They scheduled s bunch of play dates and they had a huge consignment sale in the spring which was awesome. I'm going to a different group this year since we moved and I'm excited to meet other moms in my area. I think it varies group to group, so I'd try it out once or twice and see if you'd like it.

I have wanted to go but I'm a non-believer and do not want anything to do with religion. The website for our local one seems pretty religious. I'd love to find an alternative through.

I went to one at my old church when I was a SAHM, and I really wanted to continue with it because I valued finding a community; but I started working and couldn't go anymore.

I went a few times last year. Totally not my thing at all, but I know a lot of people love it.
There was a lot of praying, I got a Bible for being new, and depending on the speaker at the meeting (different people coming to speak on different topics at each meeting), it could get suuuuper churchy. I'm not religious at ALL, which was a main reason I didn't go back. I'm also just not into the whole "scene" and thought it was lame and kinda cringe-worthy.
So now I just sit in my sweatpants and watch Peoples Court or something.

I am a member of my local MOPS group and I have gotten so much out of it! Great friendship and fun activities for me and LO

The one in our area is held in a church, run by church volunteers, but there really isn't much 'religion' at all. Once every quarter, they will have a speaker come who is a bit more religious-based, but other than that, its geared towards everyone; not just the church-attenders in the group.

I joined last year because I was new to the area and joined in the hopes it wouldn't be too religious. My group is held in a Methodist church and run by one of the pastors (who had a baby) and I really do not find it overly religious at all. They have a video for each meeting and sometimes the person in it will mention God but that's about it. And some of the topics were a lot more spicy than I would expect to be discussed in church! My DS went to Moppets and I think they would read some religious thing during their snack time and one time he colored from a Bible coloring book. I think the big thing is whether the type of meeting is something that you are interested in more than if it's too religious.

I love MOPS and recommend it to everyone! Ours is held at a church but it isn't overly religious.
