My boss is retiring. I've never been to a retirement party! What is a good gift?

Does s/he drink? Wine or liquor usually works! Or a nice photo of the two of you (if you have that kind of relationship), or of the office (you can stage a quick photo op and frame it).

Bummer he doesnt drink! Perhaps a gift card to a nice restaurant? A coworker of mine retires next week & since he and his wife are big foodies I'm getting them a gift cert to a nice restaurant in the city they're in the process of moving to.

I haven't been to one, but I've been thinking of gifts for my mom since she should be having one soon. I'm thinking of getting her some chocolates and write "retirement is sweet" on it.

He wasn't retiring but our COO left recently and we had a going away party for him. He got:
A bottle of really nice bourbon
A bag of his favorite Starbucks beans, plus some instant Starbucks packs.
A mug from Cafe Press with our company's logo on it (to remember us by).

I usually go GC to restaurant route!

I have only been to two and everyone was asked to pitch in for a group gift. One was $50 and the other $125.

A family members' and I think we gave cash.

I went to a friend's Mom's retirement party and we gave her a card and Target gift card. She was remodeling her kitchen and bathrooms at the time!
