I am thinking of getting one before baby arrives when I get a pedicure. Wondering if others have liked or disliked them!

Yes - LOVE!
ETA: I have had both the OPI Gel and the CND Shellac, and both manis lasted at least 2 weeks.

I got one for my wedding! I wasn't a huge fan, to be honest. I expected it to last through my honeymoon and it did not. It started coming apart after a few days and then I couldn't stop from peeling it off because it was driving me crazy. But the peeling left my nails really thin underneath.
It did last a little bit longer than a regular manicure, but not enough to make it worth the annoyance. However, my mom has gotten them done and hers lasted much longer than mine.
ETA: the one thing i really liked was that my nail were completely set when I left. I took a while to do, but once done there was no issue with smudging or being worried about reaching into my purse to pay.

Yes- loved it! BUT it was so hard to get off. I didn't do it properly and picked it all off and it ruined my nails.

I did the Shellac manicure for my wedding and I loved it. It looked really nice for a long time but it can make your nails a bit weaker so I wouldn't recommend doing the Shellac every time you get a manicure!

I have gotten gel twice. The first time was amazing. I thought it had changed my life and I was never going back. The second (immediately after) was awful and left my nails looking like hell. SO, I guess my life is left unchanged LOL. I wouldn't do it again back to back for sure. It

I had shellac on my fingers and toes the day before my wedding and it started cracking (not chipping - cracking. The surface looked all cracked) on my fingers a few hours after it was done. My toes were fine. I called my manicurist and she said to come in on the morning of the wedding and she'd fix it. She took the old shellac off and the reapplied it. By the time I was walking down the aisle, it was cracking again. By the end of the evening, it had also begun to chip off the ends. My toes lasted for weeks!
My husband works for a chemical company that makes shellac products - primers and stuff (for decorating). He said that because it is hard and brittle, it is very tough on hard surfaces (like my toe nails!). However, if you paint it onto flexible surfaces, it will crack and chip off! Obviously my nails were too soft and flexible for the shellac to adhere to properly.
So.... if your nails are hard, go for it! It looked beautiful! But if they are softer (you can bend mine) steer clear! That's my advice!

I do Shellac often and like it a lot! Always lasts about 12-14 days for me.

I may have naturally weak nails already, but both times I've done it (about a year apart), I had to let my nail beds recover for months afterward. I didn't peel them off, I think it's just because they have to soak the nail bed in acetone for so long to get the polish off, and the acetone ruins my nail beds. The first time, they had me just put my nails in a bowl of acetone for 10 min. The second time, they did the cotton-ball-acetone-foil wrap method....but even so, my nail bed was pretty ruined.
The nail changed in texture and would peel/crack. hard to explain. Mine weren't quite this bad, but almost! http://naturalselectionblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/IMG_2167.jpg

Yeah - I love how long they last. They don't harm my nails too bad.

I love them, but they don't love my nails. I had one in February and my nails are now just looking normal again...they peel a lot after the stuff comes off.
But that doesn't stop me, I have my own UV light!

Yep! Although they don't last 2 weeks on my nails. Maybe week to week half. They are harder to get offsi think about that with a new baby at home.

@Smurfette: That's what I was just wondering! I didn't think about the removal process with a new baby... ack!

I love shellac, but wouldn't do it prebaby because getting it off is a pain. I didn't have time to run to the salon when lo was two weeks old and the regrowth would have driven me nuts. And my nail salon is like a minute walk from home.

I love shellac manicures! They last forever on my nails. Usually 2-3 weeks.

I have and loved it. But it sort of ruined my nails for awhile after, so I've only ever gotten them about 2x - but it was right in a row, so maybe that's why?

I really liked the look of shellac and they lasted forever on me, but I couldn't deal with the removal process. My nails are very strong and healthy and they were so dry and gross after the acetone process.

I enjoy them. But it really depends on who is doing them... sometimes they will start to peel right after I get home, but if the right person does them, they will last for weeks.

I liked shellac. It lasted forever, but I wouldn't want to get them all the time because you put your hands under UV to set the nails.
