Today I was with the two LOs and my 80 year old grandmother and we got stuck! It started to go up, came back down and the buttons stopped working! We had no cellphone reception and the emergency call didn't work...I ended up partially prying the door open and yelling until someone walked by and called the emergency number for us! Thankfully we were "rescued" within about half an hour but it was stressful.
Has anyone else gone through this? What did you do?
Aside: anyone have advice for changing a streak of bad luck???

Yes! When we lived in Vietnam, we had frequent power outages and while the generator would kick back on power to the apartment, it didn't power the elevators. I got stuck for an hour one time. I was with friends, so we just camped out on the floor and had our phones to peruse the internet.
But after that I took the stairs most of the time and got into shape as we were on the 12th floor. Not probably a good solution with a baby though

Yes with my two sisters when we were all kids. I think we were ok because our parents knew we were there and could talk to us. I think my youngest sister was scared. Even though it wasn't particularly traumatic I still think of it sometimes in elevators like I always know it's a possibility!

@Baby Boy Mom: no ideas on the changing of luck - sorry. But we were stuck with LO1 in an elevator for 3 hours once when he was around 6 months old. Bad thing was his diaper had already blown out before we got stuck. It was in a cave deep down and he was in a SSC, there was a no food policy in place so nobody had anything to eat or drink. Luckily I was nursing so at least he was fed. We wrapped him up in a couple of additional adult jackets because he was just SOOOOO wet and it was cold!
Something I prefer to not having to experience again. -
Ugh! Yes, twice! My advice is pee before you have to get on an elevator and if you see it's packed, don't get on.
Both of mine were pretty bad!
1) DH and I were at a luxury all inclusive in cancun. The elevator up to the rooms is glass and on the outside of the building. It started storming badly, water was pouring out of the ceiling of the hotel. DH decided to take the elevator up to our room - bad idea! We were stuck for 2 hours on the outside of a building with no power and all this crazy lighting striking so close! Horrible experience!The second time was at the office, returning from a fire drill so the elevator had 18 people!!! We were stuck for over an hour.

@wheres_c: Oh my gosh, getting stuck in an outside elevator during a lightning storm is pretty much my worst nightmare! Kudos to you for getting through it!!

This freaks me out! I actually refuse to go in elevators and will walk up 15 flights of stairs if I have to!

Once as a kid. I was with my Brownie troop and some moms, including mine. We were visiting a nursing home. Luckily we weren't stuck for too long!

Yes! In Mexico on our honeymoon....lets just say they don't have the same safety standards. It was terrifying!!

Yes, a friend and I got stuck in the elevator of my apartment building. Luckily, it wasn't too long. Less than 10 minutes, maybe? They just had to reset something. It happened frequently in our building, but since I lived on a high floor, I always took the elevator.
My husband once got stuck in an elevator for a seriously long time. The fire department was there and he eventually crawled out a small space at the top because it was between floors. He missed an important meeting.
When it's 3 floors or less, I tend to take the stairs.

Yes! I am a wedding photographer and we were doing portraits with the bride and groom and wedding party on a rooftop downtown. We were stuck for about 45 minutes with the bride and groom and a few wedding party members, we were not over the weight limit. The bride totally lost her cool, it was scary. But we made it to the ceremony just in time. For sure one of the most memorable things that has happened to me on the job

No, but I've had such vivid nightmares about it that I had to think hard about whether or not it had actually happened to me! I think I dreamt it because in my old building they were always working on them and I'd come out my door and see guys hanging out of the elevator shaft!

Yes. In old campus building, on my way to my very last ever Russian final. We sat there for about 10 minutes before it magically started up again. Then the five of us, freaked out beyond measure, rush into our final, late. Our bitchy Russian professor gives us the nastiest look, but of course doesn't want to hear why we're late, because it's silent and everyone is already taking the final. So, that was fun.

Once! I got stuck in the elevator at work heading to lunch. I was with 3-4 of my coworkers and the call button was working, so we didn't get worried or anything. We were just hungry!

Several times, in one of the dorm elevators when I was at college. It was always kind of funny - something you totally expected out of that dorm. We (group of girls) were always in the elevator with at least one guy when it happened, so they just pried the doors open and we climbed out.

I did at work when I was 8 months pregnant. I was in there with a Doctor that I work with. I would not have been a happy camper if I went into labor and he had to deliver. It would have made for an awkward professional relationship.

@Pumuckl: In a cave?! Yikes! In my internal monologue I was calming myself down by saying at least I had food and water with us because I had packed a lunch...and the little one can still BF.
@wheres_c: Outdoor glass elevator in a storm... I think you take the cake! Did the resort people know you were in there?
As an update, after talking it over, I've decided that I'm actually lucky that I keep being saved from these crazy situations. I'm trying to figure out what message the universe is sending me....still working on it though.
