My mother's day gift was a gift certificate to a local spa. I've never been to a real spa... just "spa like" salons for pedicures.
My face is a nightmare this month... tons of blemishes and my skin is just blah. I was thinking about using the GC to get a facial but I've never had one.
If you've had one, did you like it? Did it improve your skin at all? Make you break out? Wondering if I should go for it, or just use the $$ for a pedicure or something else.

I had my first one ever while I was visiting in Mexico earlier this month. Included at the resort is a certain amount of spa time. Normally I'd get a massage but because I'm pregnant I opted for the facial instead. It was relaxing, but I didn't really see any difference in my face.

I've had ones I like and ones I didn't. The one I didn't like was that she didn't tell me what she was going to do and she started squeezing out my black/white heads around my nose and it hurt so much! Their technique is important too I guess!

I have had two facials (maybe three?). They were okay. I was always disappointed that they didn't make a huge difference in my skin though.

I've had a lot...they usually involve cleansing, toning, massage, extraction, steaming and a masque.
I personally love them, because I feel like they level set my skin.

I think you need to get them consistently for a period of time for them to really make a difference. I've had awesome ones and I've had one or two that weren't so great. Also, they can sometimes have a "purging" effect on your skin, so it may get worse before it gets better. My favorite place always does some sort of fruit peel that makes my skin look for even and refreshed.

I love getting facials. I agree with @petunia354:, though, in that I thik you need to get regular facials in order to really see a long-lasting difference in your skin. That being said, I do always feel like my skin feels more refreshed and "awake" after a facial. And they always recommend a routine for me. For example, I just had a facial a couple of weeks ago and she told me that my skin is parched, and if I used a better moisturizer, my pores wouldn't be so large and noticeable (which was my one big complaint at the start of the treatment). She also recommended either getting sun protection from my makeup or using a separate sunscreen altogether on my face - she said that once you start adding sunscreen to a moisturizer, it takes away from moisturizer's ability to do its job.

I like facials a lot but I would rather get a hot stone massage if it's a once in a while splurge. I think to see positive results for facials, it would require multiple visits and also if your skin agrees with the spa's facial products too. Whatever you choose, hope you get pampered and feel like royalty mama! Sorry your skin is breaking out, my friend is a manager at Shiseido and gives me plenty of samples! How about I send you some?

I love them! But the ones I have had had massages as part of them so they were really relaxing. My skin feels amazing after them!

I got one once. It was okay but i wouldnt rush back to do it.
I remember that the lady said, "your skin looks great for 25 but you should do blah blah blah." I had just turned 30

Definitely get a facial over a pedicure. It feels indulgent and you typically get a hand and foot massage too! My skin feels soft after, but not sure if there is an improvement. I have fine skin though. I don't like massages, they hurt/tickle and I am too tense to enjoy them.

@Sparkler: I've never had a massage, but I think I'd feel similarly to you. I'm not a huge fan of backrubs, and I don't think I'd enjoying being still for that long!

@Pepper: Exactly! The facial has the massage setting though as you are in a dark room with music, etc., so I find it feels more spa than just a pedicure. Have fun!!

I get facials on a regular basis (usually every quarter, sometimes more, sometimes less) and I think they make a huge difference in my skin. The quality and outcome of a facial, like anything else, really depends on where you go and who you see. And I didn’t see better lasting results until I started going on a somewhat regular basis.
They should be using products for your specific skin issues and concerns, not just the same stuff for everyone and ask you a lot of questions about your skin and what you want to improve or work on or whatever. Better quality products also help too, of course. I had a facial on our last cruise and it was short and nothing special. I mean, it was fun, but I don’t think it really did much for my skin. The ones I do regularly involve multiple masks, steam, toning, gentle exfoliation, etc. (Like what @Looch said). They also always include decorage work, arm/hand massage and foot/lower leg massage. In short, they are HEAVEN.

I've had quite a few and like others say, I think they make your skin feel great - but as a one off they don't make much difference long term. Would still recommend one though, very relaxing and a real treat

@yoursilverlining: Every quarter is something I'd be OK with! This place seems very nice... they do a skin consultation first, and then they have a regimen similar to what Looch mentioned. I'm excited now! I made an appointment for the end of June, so hopefully it'll be nice.

Facials are absolutely my favorite form of pampering. I agree that you really need to go routinely to see a lasting difference in your skin, something I've never done. I have an incredibly hard time feeling relaxed during a massage but regularly fall asleep and turn into a liquid pool of relaxation during/after a facial. Can't wait to hear how you like it!

I've had one once or twice and it was super nice. But, I'm always turned off by them because I hate when they try to sell you on other services and products.

I've been getting facials every six weeks for about 10 years now. Makes a huge difference in my skin and I enjoy the me time. I would definitely get a facial over a massage because a facial usually includes a little shoulder massage anyways. But like others have said, don't expect miracle ski after one session. That said, I think you can notice some difference.
