I went to the doctor today to see if I had an ear infection (I do). To be able to see my ear drum, though, they had to flush out my wax. The nurse who did it did an excellent job with not just water and peroxide, but using tools, as well. It may sound weird but I LOVE the feeling of my ears being cleaned out. 
Have you ever had this done? Did you know that excessive ear wax is genetic?

A few years ago I went to a regular checkup, and was told I had excessive earwax buildup. They gave me a little kit to take home with me. It was so insanely satisfying to see that big old chunk of earwax come out after using the kit at home for a few days. It was amazing!
I did not know that excessive earwax was genetic, interesting.

I have once, they didn't use the water, I went to an ears, nose, and throat specialist, and they just used that tool thing. It felt SOOO weird, but it felt amazing after!!
Can you make an appointment just to have them do that, I wonder...?

I think it's an Asian thing but I have a little ear scoop to clean out my earwax. My mom used to clean our ears when we were younger and we loved it. Now I do it frequently and it's so satisfying, DH loves it too (and he's Caucasian)!

When I was like 5?
The doc sprayed a stream of warm water in my ears. A huge piece of earwax came out of both.it was weird! And gross

I had a tiny bug get stuck in my ear and had to get that flushed out! I've used the drops that are supposed to help dissolve the wax, but never had them really cleaned our by the doctor. I think I just have small ear canals, not excessive wax.

I'm waiting to see the doc right now for a possible ear infection. I've never hady ears cleaned out.... Maybe they'll do it today!

@Sammyfab: Just asking because I know my mom damaged her ear drum with a stick or something when she was little, and now she is 100% deaf in her left eat, and 50% deaf in her right ear for over compensating!!

@Sammyfab: @MrsBrewer: My aunt is also deaf in one ear because she slipped and jabbed her ear drum while she was cleaning her ear out with a Qtip-- so be careful. I'm super cautious with anything in my ear because of her story, which my mom drilled into me from a young age.

@lawbee11: The doc just sent me to the pharmacy, I didn't need an Rx or anything, but it was behind the counter and I had to ask the pharmacist for it. I would imagine you could find this online, though, or at a larger/well-stocked pharmacy like Walgreens or CVS.

Yes, I've had it done a couple times! It's the best!! Although the last time I had it done, it did some minor damage to my ear drum, but it healed, so it was fine. Both times was with the warm water spray.

@sloaneandpuffy: We always candled our ears too! Mostly when we had a cold of something to help get all the junk out.
I had a flush done at a clinic once when I was a kid. I had tubes in my ears so I had to put wax in for my swimming lessons....and one time it got stuck. So they stuck a syringe through, flushed out of the gum wax, a bunch of ear wax, and my ear tube! It was the weirdest feeling!

@Sammyfab: Haha totally an Asian thing! My husband and I realized this one day when I "confessed" to him that my mom used to scoop out our ear wax, and then he said his did too. He thought it was a gross family secret he had been keeping for so many years!
I think there was even a Seinfeld episode where Elaine was talking about how she was sitting next to a Korean man on the plane who was scooping his ear wax out with a spoon!

I've never had it done at a doctor's office, but I have tried ear candling. I got the worst ear infection from that. Never again.

I would love to have my ears cleaned out! I always get sad when I use a q-tip and nothing comes out...I bet getting a big chunk out would be very satisfying.

I never have, but my husband has. His ears get really waxy. He's gone to the dr several times to get his ears flushed out. He likes to describe what comes out of them to me, especially when I'm eating...not cool, DH, not cool...

Yes, I had it done a few years ago at my drs office and I hated it!! I was amazed at the ball that came out, GROSS! DH and I went in for a routine check-up back in September, and I was scared that I'd have to have it done again, but luckily I didn't. But DH did!

We've had to have this done for Wagon Jr. a couple of times already. Once one ear was totally blocked up. So sad. We haven't needed the flush though-- they were able to get most of it out with the little scoop. I was surprised when I saw the instrument-- it does look a bit like the Asian ear pick thing! We have them everywhere but I wouldn't dare try to use it for fear of pushing it in further. The last time we got it done (made an appointment especially for it) RIBBONS AND RIBBONS of crusty wax came out of his ear. It was so gross and I couldn't believe the amount that came out. I actually picked up pieces and showed him and said "look at the yucky that came out of your ear!!" He didn't care.. he just wanted his lollipop... and when I was strapping him into the car he declared that the doctor put a shovel in his ear. Hehe.

I had them flushed out years ago when I had a sinus infection, flew to and from the Bahamas, and then got a major ear infection. It was disgusting, and I could not believe the crap that came out. I tried to get the doctor to do it once since, but she looked and said I didn't need it.

Several times. It's so gross. And I go in because my ear has been plugged for days and I'm half deaf. So because I wait, it's raw and inflamed and that makes it hurt! The dr uses the water jet thing. The world is so loud afterwards!
Since I discovered that she just uses plain old tap water, I just do it myself with a sterile 60cc syringe. I'm much gentler.

Can you use the asian scoop on wet waxy ear wax? My Mom only ever did it on me (and not my brothers) because I have "dry" ear wax and they have "wet" waxy ear wax.

i've gotten them cleaned maybe 2 or 3 times by my doctor, when i was in my teens/early 20s. he'd give me drops to soften the wax for a few days, then i'd go back in his office and he would flush out my ears with a waterpik. it felt soooo good.
i wonder why i don't get as much wax anymore. maybe it's because i don't spend as much time gabbing on the phone anymore.
