I did with a friend once in high school when we ditched school. We lived in a gated community though, and it was inside the community. This Christian guy playing Christian music with a Christian bumper sticker picked us up and was the nicest guy. I can't believe we did that though!

once, when i was like 4 or 5. i ran away to my grandparents house.
yaaaaaa, not the brightest child.
as an adult i always say i've seen too many criminal minds to ever do it.
ETA: My dad once picked up a hitchhiker, and then got into an accident....the hitchhiker sued my dad, and won. We were told/taught never ever to pick ANYONE up.

If you live in a ski town, it's what you do. Just the norm. It was ok when I was living in Hawaii too. I've never done it alone, though, I don't think...

Once in Denmark, while studying abroad there. I was drunk and it was 2am... If it had been the us I probably would have been picked up by some unsavory characters, but in Denmark it was a nice older woman who drove me home.

Yep, when i was in college. I rode in a guy's pickup truck bed on the freeway in the rain. Smart move!!

Kinda. On our honeymoon we had hiked across St.John VI & had planned on taking a taxi back to the bay but once we reached the other side of the island there was NO ONE there. We hiked back across to the main road. As soon as we reached the top (I was about ready to pass out) there was a taxi giving a guided tour. He was kind enough to pick us up and take us back to the bay.

My dad picked up strangers several times when I was growing up. And there was a woman in our town who didn't have a car, and her and her son would walk to town and my dad picked them up multiple times. But myself? I would never ever hitch hike or pick someone up!!! Not the same world as it was back when people did it regularly!

I would say no, never but then I remembered I did.
Last year or maybe it was the year before, we had a bad snow storm and the road leading up to my community was closed. I had to park my car at golf course and walk up that hill and then to my place. It would have been a 3-4 mile walk. It would have taken me about 30 min to walk it.
Anyway, I started walking up the hill and started getting out of breath. This road was closed but there were some AWD cars that found a way past the road blocks.
This suburu saw me and asked me if I wanted a ride to the top. Luckily he had his daughter in the car so I agreed. He drove me to the top of the hill and I walked the rest of the way home.

Never have, can't conceive of a situation that I ever would. A school friend was murdered when I was 17 after hitching a ride with a stranger. It's just too risky.

Once - on New Year's Eve when I was out with some friends and we could not get a taxi back to our friend's place...I never would have done it if I didn't have my friends with me (including my husband who was just a friend at the time)

I did, just once, about 4 winters ago. A few of my friends and I had gone skiing in Taos for New Year's Eve and we had a pretty bad car wreck in the snow, going up the mountain. My friends car was towed to a shop and the police gave us a ride to where we were staying.
Two days later, when we needed to go check on the car, we decided to hitch a ride. Honestly, it was my idea, but I felt really lame standing on the side of the road with my thumb up. We got a ride, and although the guy was a little weird he didn't seem threatening at all. It was more embarrassing than scary. Btw...I was 28, so not a teenager or anything. ;-/

Yeah a few times when I lived in a really small town. Now looking back I think I was nuts!
