No, but once in college a guy offered my friend and I a ride and we got in. He was a student and we weren't traveling that far. He was listening to Dixie Chicks. Still probably not a great idea and I have no idea why we did it! Don't tell mom!

In ski towns you do all the time. We'd frequently go snowboard into the back country and end up a couple of miles from the resort or home, so you hitch back to where you need to be. Luckily, you either know the people picking you up or they know someone you know. One time Jim Rippey picked us up

No, an acquaintance of mine in high school was murdered while hitch-hiking and it turned me off ever taking the risk.

I did it a lot when I lived in a very rural community, 3 hours from the nearest city on very narrow, winding roads. I took a bus to get too and from the city to do my shopping, banking, etc. The bus company workers went on strike quite often, so my only option for getting out of town was flagging down random vehicles. Though this is relatively common in the country I was living in (Bolivia). I never really felt unsafe (other than the fact that I was usually in the back of a pickup on the narrow, winding roads with bajillion foot drop-offs).

Kind of. It was NYE and we couldn't get a cab or on the bus and were too far to walk home. But there were 5 of us (including 3 guys) and we paid the guy $40 to drive us 3 miles. I would never do the typical hitchhiking. Too dangerous.

No way! But my brother is currently hitchhiking around the Pacific Northwest. Every few years, his wanderlust kicks in and he takes off. He has some horrifying stories, as well as some hilarious ones. I'm sure my experiences would ALL be horrifying!

No, but I have taken rides with strangers, if that makes any sense. I was living in Hoboken and working in Manhattan after 9/11, and normally took the bus through the Lincoln Tunnel. My bus stop was the last one before the tunnel, and directly on the route that a lot of cars would take.

Right after 9/11, there were restrictions in place that prohibited cars with only one driver from entering the tunnel, so there would often be cars that would stop at my bus stop and offer a ride to people waiting for the bus. I said yes on more than one occasion. In retrospect, this was probably a terrible idea, but I did meet some interesting people.

Nope, I watched enough horror movies as a child to ever hitchhike. Also, I was quite shy, so, that wouldn't have worked for me.

kind of- in nyc one freezing winter there was a transit strike. i got a ride halfway home (30+blocks) one time with someone who stopped, but i was with 4 other coworkers in the car, and it didn't feel like hitchiking

Yes, a few times in high school/ college. I have picked people up, too, but not in awhile.
