I'm about to re-do an armoire. Trying to decide if sanding is a necessity before painting!

My DH has and I say yes to get rid of the dirt, oil and grime. That way the paint sticks better and it's a uniform coat.

My default answer would be yes, assuming that there is some kind of protective seal that has been placed on top of the stain. Sanding will likely improve the results (otherwise you are just painting over the cracks and nicks . . . unless that is the look you are going for!).
