Or hitchhiked?
DH came home last night and told me he picked up a guy who was walking on the street and drove him two miles to his house. He said if he could do it over again he'd have called me to let me know first, but it was spontaneous. He said it was soo cold out last night (single digits, wind chill around 0), and he felt really bad for the guy.

Never by myself, DH and my dad would kill me if I ever did that lol. I've never hitchhiked either.

Nope, never. DH would kill me if I did it while I was alone. I've seen too many scary movies.

I have, for the very same reasons your DH did. In this particular case I was with my brother, so it seemed like it would be OK. I have also stopped to offer a ride to people I have seen walking along a busy street with no sidewalks, or people who obviously look lost (I grew up in a very touristy place, with lots of confused, lost people so it is not uncommon!). I have never done it where I currently live, though, only in my hometown.

On base (Military) I have stopped to see if a sailor who is walking wants a ride.
Other than that one other time I saw a mom and her daughter who's van would not start at the grocery store and I took them home. Oh and once back home I saw someone go in the ditch and I stopped and picked them up.

Haha now that I think about it I guys most of us here are ladies, and way less likely to take that chance!
I took a ride home from a guy once, when I was 19. I was walking like 4 miles home from a job interview, and it was over 100 degrees and I thought I was going to faint. I only agreed after he showed me his DL and work badge (turned out he worked for the fire department...not that that necessarily meant he wouldn't rape and kill me, but in my head it made it okay, lol).

I really have no plans to ever. If a really unique situation came along (which I don't even know what that would be!) I might consider it. However, I am against if for either party.
1. You don't know who your picking up.
2. You don't know who you're getting in a vehicle with.

A long time ago I picked up a young teen boy who was walking in a snowstorm. He wasn't hitchhiking, but I offered to drop him in town because I was worried he'd get hurt. In hindsight it was a bad idea, but I've made far worse choices so I'm not gonna worry about it now! DH would never let me do it though!
