We have a privacy fence so no electric fence for us. I know a lot of people who have been disappointed in them because the pup learns its just one quick shock and once they get past it they are free. I don't really see the point of the trouble/expense if you'll always be outside with them anyway.

@twodoghouse: ah gotcha. We are lucky in that our pup doesn't like to be where he can't see us so if we were outside with him we wouldn't have to worry about him bolting.

We have a pet grade electric fence running the length of our privacy fence and around some trees. One of my dogs has a habit of biting the tree trunks and fence boards when she is overly excited and to stop her from doing that we ran one line of wire at the height she needed to discourage her from accessing those two things. We made sure to get pet grade rather than farm grade power source. Yes, there were two instances of yelping when she was first testing her boundaries but she is a very sensitive dog. The other dog will cross the wires no problem as no shock bothers her, she just isn't overly sensitive. It really depends on the dog if it is appropriate or not and I would only recommend a pet grade power source.

My sister is a manager for a high end pet fence company and all of our family dogs and cats use this. It's extremely effective and not harmful to the animals.
Educate yourselves on the uses and "shock" before deciding because it's not harmful.
If used correctly and the animals and owners go through all the necessary training it's wonderful and safe.

No. DH's parents tried one for their dog years ago, but it didn't work. My FIL even tried going through it so he could know what it was like!

We have the Invisible Fence Company fence and love it. Cooper (basset hound/beagle mix) has only been shocked 3 times (once during training, twice on his own in the first week) but we've had it a year and he hasn't been shocked since. Honestly, he doesn't even wear his collar 80% of the time.
