Have you ever had buyers remorse? I was terrified of buying a house because of such a huge financial commitment and that we weren't ready. The house we bought is great, but eventually needs new paint, updated bathrooms, floors...and the cost of it all seems like such a pipe dream and so overwhelming I feel like I am starting to have buyers remorse!

We love our house and neighborhood, but I think we both regret not offering a lower price and maybe waiting a little bit longer to buy. We bought right before everything crashed so we know the likelyhood of us getting what we paid is unlikely (even though we built a fence and finished to basement).

Aww! I felt the same way...we put in new carpet, windows, and paint before we even moved in. We still need to do a lot of cosmetic upgrades but we are not in a big rush!

We do on our house, but we were in such a hurry, and this was prior to us buying our business so everything we've been wanting to do to it has been put on hold, which makes it worse. =(
We just need to saddle up and take baby steps to renovating our home!

We haven't bought, but we did put in an offer on a place that was rejected, and ultimately, we are really glad it was. The other buyer offered over the asking price, then it fell through and went back on the market and we decided not to resubmit our offer. We ended up renting again.

@mrsmenow: we got our house 5K under list price and a total steal for the area we moved to. i am positive had we not accepted the counter offer "as is" someone would have come along with a higher offer and gotten it...so it's tough!
@autumnlove i got an estimate for paint today--exterior alone would be 3500 and interior foyer and living areas ONLY would be about 1600...kitchen wallpaper texture would be 800...i am just like OMG...it is going to be a long time before we can do anything!
@aliv0001 i keep thinking baby steps too, but i am such a go-getter i have got to settle down!
@foodnerd81 my dad would always tell me you never make a bad investment by renting. buying this house is good for us, ultimately, but it still FREAKS me out. we were able to do a conventional 15 year mortgage though, so we will have our home paid off in 15 year or less. -
We just bought our house and I felt this way a few weeks ago (before everything was final), but now I am excited. Right off the bat we need to put in a new water heater, get the furnace fixed and update the electrical. Those are must do's right now. We are also installing a dishwasher right away, which isn't a must do but we wanted it done, ok I wanted it done. We have to paint, fix some minor repairs like trim, install smoke detectors (why do these people not have any?), plus they have had several people live in the basement so we are buying new locks. The kitchen is very old, and frankly quite ugly. The light fixtures need updating, the bathroom window is rotting and lets not even talk about the basement. The list goes on and on and on. We can take most of these projects one step at a time though, and we are going to try and have fun with it, while making it our own. It is move in ready, but not exactly how we want it to be. Hang in there, try and have fun with it and take everything one step at a time!

@matador84: Could you paint yourselves? We are buying paint and can paint the entire inside (main and upstairs, plus 1 room and a half bath in the basement) for around $400.

@bao that is exactly how i feel. it is move in ready, just not the way we want it to be. there are parts of the house that are so charming, but it needs to be updated so bad. we actually need new electrical at some point, all the sockets aren't grounded, new light fixtures as well, bathroom reno, new floors...eek!

I did a little when we first bought our home just because it is SOOO much money and there is no guarnatee we'll get it all back when we sell. But I felt a LOT better about it after we did our taxes this year and got a huge return from the interest deductions. First time in years I haven't owed taxes and it's all because I"m a home owner. Also, our home didn't need any major renovations other than fixing some patches, painting and upgrading small things like doorknobs, etc. so it's not a money pit. We have already increased the value significantly with small DIY projects in the year that we've lived there. It's also in a great location - we sacrificed space to be here, but better for quality of life and resale value.

Buying a house is seriously the most stressful thing ever!!
We just signed papers for our new house yesterday. We ended up paying way more than we wanted (but still 6,800 below list price) but we can literally move right in and not have to change a thing (so long as the house inspection goes ok). Eventually we may do a wall cutout to open the kitchen to the living room and spruce up our exterior.
We ended up spending $12k more than I was comfortable with before we started our house hunting. It all came down to peace of mind of actually finding a house, living in a really great neighbourhood, and having a home that we know we will be really comfortable in.
The first house we bought we liked it enough to buy it and we knew we'd be doing some renovations. In the 2.5 years we were there we painted all the rooms, gutted the ensuite, gutted our kitchen and knocked down a wall, installed new hardwood on the main floor, new roof, new upstairs carpet, new powder room vanity...we wouldn't be moving out yet if it weren't for DH's work, but completing all of those renovations really made us love our home and we are sad to leave it. On the upside, we sold our house in a week and got list price for it!
So, all of that to say...yes, it's a scary huge investment but totally worth it in the end!

We bought a house in va and we totally have buyers remorse. We bought it before the market tanked. We've moved out of va and can't sell it for a long time.

I was worried about this too when we bought our house, but I think it was just the stress of taking such a huge step and committing to such a huge financial responsibility.
We have lived in our house a year now, and while we still want to update things cosmetically (we haven't done much), I have fallen more in love with our house over the year and don't have those feelings of regret much anymore. I know what we got really was what was best for us!
