Not much HelloBeeing during the work day for me any more. So I thought I'll start the discussion early!

We will ONLY be discussing Chapters 1 through the end of Chapter 5 this week.
So if you've read past please don't discuss past chapter 5!!!

Let's get started!

***********
Mysteries are one of my favorite genres. I like piecing together the story; flipping back to see if a hunch of mine is backed by something a few chapters back. My least favorite part is the first chapter. When you know something bad is about to happen but you don't know what yet. It's like walking through a dimly lit street, by yourself at night, just waiting for a shadow to jump out at you!

Being from NYC just the setting of this book drew me in. I've noticed that there has been a revitalization of Red Hook in the last few years. Suddenly it's become this new, edgy & hip neighborhood. Much like what happened in Williamsburg about a decade ago?
From the description it sounds like the story is happening just at the cusp of this revitalization. For our New Yorkers; does the author provide an accurate description of Red Hook, in your opinion? For the non NYers does her description make you want to visit Red Hook?

One of the biggest foundations of this book is the friendship between June & Valerie. Two girls at the cusp of becoming teenagers. Seems to me a metaphor might be the sweet, innocent, fragile friendships of childhood being able to transcend into the teenage years. Did you have a childhood best friend? Were you June or Val?

Let's talk about the mystery. What do you think happened to June? Do you think she's alive? The author sets a scene of a sultry summer night with the innocence of young girls. You can't help but think the worst; that the innocence of a young girl has been lost. Do you think we have met the culprit yet?

See you after Chapter 11!
