It's been about seven weeks since my miscarriage. I've had my blood drawn a few times to check HCG and it has been slowly dropping. About a week ago I had a significant bleed again. A couple days ago my HCG was a six. The doctor wants me to get blood drawn again in a week. Is it normal for it to take this long to drop? Can you not get your period back until after it is zero? Do I really need to get my blood drawn until it is zero/what is the risk of not doing this? We have to pay for all ultrasounds, blood draws, etc. until we hit our deductible, blah! Generally, they'll test until it's below 5. It can be really frustrating, but my doctor said it can be an indicator of retained tissue. I was lucky and mine dropped quickly after each of my M/C's. I started my period about two weeks after it dropped to zero. Good luck. You're almost there. I'm sorry for your loss.

Like futuremama said, they test until it's < 5. It took 5 weeks for me. And then I had my period about 4 weeks later, so I appeared to have a somewhat normal cycle once my hcg was down.

I'm not sure exactly how long it took for mine to come down, but I'd guess it was around 5 or 6 weeks.
I would assume that with a bleed, they're probably more likely to want to monitor your HCG. They follow it to make sure there isn't any retained tissue that could cause an infection.
As it got lower, it took longer to drop though. So while it dropped fast at first, the last couple of weeks seemed to take forever.

Mine took 8 weeks. I had a big bleed and passed retained tissue and then it was finally over. I got a period 4 weeks later like clockwork. Hopefully it's over for you soon. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

At 5 weeks post D&C, my hcg level was at 4. My period had actually returned at 4 weeks post D&C but the low levels of hcg still lingered. That was about 2 weeks ago so I'm hoping that I'm back down to zero by now (my ob/gyn isn't checking now that I'm below 5 but my RE won't let me start a clomid cycle until I'm at 0).

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm sorry all of you had to go through this too. I'm supposed to get blood work done again tomorrow but I may wait another week to give it more time to drop.. I really hope my cycle is back to normal soon.

@bluerose: after my mc in October, it took 6 weeks for my HCg to read <5. I got my period a week later. Sometimes it just takes our bodies awhile to get back to normal. Good luck to you. Is there a chance your significant bleed was AF? I hear some girls get their periods before it reaches below 5. It's really crappy when you have to pay for scans and bloodwork so I'm sorry you have to go through this. I had retained tissue and was having two scans a week for 4 weeks, I can't imagine having to pay.

Thanks again for the responses. So helpful to hear other people's situations. I just wanted to update this in case anyone does a search for this topic in the future. I know research helped me when going through the miscarriage.
It took a little over 9 weeks for the hcg to drop to <1, which is what my doc office tested until. And in that time I do think I got my period twice- about thirty days after miscarriage I thought I had my period but then a week later had a crazy bleed so I was confused and thought it was retained tissue (which the big bleed definitely was). But then thirty days from the start of that first period I got my period again. So it does seem like I got my period back before hcg dropped below 5. Best wishes to anyone reading this
