I need to pick a new health insurance plan and my bf and I are talking about trying to have a baby in 2016(!!!) but I'm a little overwhelmed with all the options. His work offers insurance but for now I'm going to continue getting my own. Do you have any advice? Is it worth paying for a more expensive plan therefore my deductible is lower?

I think it is really dependent upon many factors, such as the plan themselves, when the insurance year begins, and when you are ttc in 2016. I never changed my plan to one with no deductible because the premium difference over the year was more expensive then my deductible. Many of my pregnancy appointments weren't subject to a deductible anyway. I was able to save money for my deductible which I knew I was going to meet for the actual delivery. But outside of that, the only time I paid towards my deductible was for my infertility appointments.

I've always done the high deductible plans, even when TTC. It ended up taking a while to get pregnant with DD, so I was happy to have the reduced premiums, and I was able to save up money toward delivery when she finally came. For LO#2, I'm switching to a more traditional plan because my employer will cover prenatal care and delivery 100% without hitting my deductible. It really just depends on your plans. This stuff is all so complicated.

I usually go with the CDHP because it's cheaper if you don't have much or of you have a lot of expenses, but it's really dependent on individual situations.

I would look at what they cover first. My HMO covers prenatal 100%, free labs, and I paid nothing for my hospital stay (6.5 days, NICU, emergency C-section, etc). They also covered every well baby check up through 1 year. We had a few visits for illness that we paid for but between pregnancy and the first year we were at the doctor every 10 days I don't think we spent more than $100 in co-pays over that 2 year period.
