If you and your partner BOTH travel alot for work, what is your childcare situation? A lot for each: 3-4 nights OOT, 2-3 weeks per month.

I can't really figure out your exact travel from your post and how much overlap your OOT trips have.
My husband used to travel a good bit (all 5 days on the road - his office was actually located 2 hours away) as did I for client meetings (3 days a week -
usually 1.5 hours away). BUT, we both were back home within working hours (traveled 9 AM to 4 PM, for instance). The only problem our specific jobs caused was if there was a call in the middle of the day that our son needed us. We would often be in other parts of the state and unable to get to him. We had a combination of nanny who we implicitly trusted, an amazing village / grandparents, and mother's day out (for socialization). We also made sure my parents had the authority to pursue medical care for him as that was our biggest concern (we granted a medical power of attorney for a minor).If it were OOT overnight travel that overlapped I guess I would probably look into a live-in nanny, but not an au pair? I think au pair hours tap out at 45 and if you are talking overnight care you would reach that max really fast.

Not me, but a friend of mine. She and her DH can be gone for a week at a time at different times. They had live in help until their child was about 5 (and in full day daycare). They scaled back to a nanny who did aftercare and weekends/overnights when necessary.

@LBee: each person may have 2/4 or 3/4 weeks of multiple day overnight travel in a month. Likely overlap of 1-2 weeks when both would be out of town at the same time in a month.

Not exactly your situation but I have as much travel as you two and my Dh doesn't travel but does work 12s including overnights and sometimes long OT on top of that. We are fortunate in that we try to alternate with each other and if we can't, MIL stays over. We are finally about to move into a house that will have a dedicated guest room downstairs so that will be helpful. I only work PT now though, partially because our work schedules allowed for very little family time when I was FT. (Like maybe a day a month.)

@2littlepumpkins: thankfully this is not our schedule now. My dad is not volunteering to take on more than a back up role if my schedule changes.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: yes we are lucky MIL enjoys her time with our kids. That sounds tough if your travel times are not flexible at all.

We have a friend & her husband who both travel a lot for work. They had a live in nanny for awhile.
