My 10 month old pinches ALL THE TIME. It's basically his only self soothing mechanism. When he nurses he constantly pinches my breasts, chest and arms. He also pinches me when he's tired. It makes me CRAZY and it's legitimately really painful. I've tried holding his hand but he just unlatches and screams until I let go and let him pinch me again. This has been an ongoing issue as long as I can remember. You can't discipline and infant and I just keep assuming he'll grow out of it, but it's really getting to me at this point. Any magic ideas?

DD grabs handfuls of my boob when nursing and it's super painful. I got a teething necklace, pictured below, that she will grab instead, or she also has a lovey blanket that I'll give her and redirect her to grab that.

@kiddosc: Oooo interesting, I have a couple teething necklaces, I'll try that. I don't know if it will satisfy him because he likes to pinch really tiny bits of skin (to inflict the most possible pain??) but it's worth a shot!

Mine was a face smacker/hair puller probably at 9 months or so and I hated it! Nursing was so annoying unless it was before nap or bed. It passed though

@Truth Bombs: That's why I like this style of necklace. There's lots of little folds of fabric to satisfy itty bitty pinches.

@winniebee: I'm glad to hear it was just a phase. Interestingly, my LO is the opposite, he pinches worse when he's tired. I'm starting to really dread bed time.

@Truth Bombs: would a very soft squishy toy work - he could still pinch little bits of "skin" that way, but just not your skin!

DS was a hair puller - it was miserable. He used it to self soothe and I'm convinced he caused a small bald spot (or at least helped it, coupled with post partum hairloss). The only thing that finally stopped it was getting a lovey for him that he could torture. That poor lovey's ears are pretty much in tatters.

I have no solutions, just commiseration. DD did this as an infant and STILL does it at almost 3. She loves to pinch my neck skin and gets upset when I tell her to stop.

With my daughter I would throw a burp cloth over the "pinching zone" for her to pinch instead of me.

No real advice here. DD is 14 months and she still beats the crap out of me when she nurses - pinches, hits, rakes her nails across my skin. It drives me nuts. When she does it I unlatch her and tell her no. That usually stops it for a few minutes (seconds) and she does seem to be getting better. She's starting to understand if she hurts me, she doesn't get milkies.

@Truth Bombs: no help. Just commiseration, my daughter has made me bleed a few times and I have a couple scars around one of my nipples. But it will end!...eventually.

My DS had that phase. I used to stick the stuffed animal part of his wubbanub in his hand so he could squeeze that instead, that or my fingers.

DD does the same thing! She's 5.5 months now and nursing her is so painful.... she whacks me repeatedly on the chest, grabs my face, pinches, wrenches her head back and forth with my nipple in her mouth.. *sigh*... glad to hear it's just a phase....
