I’m literally about to cry. I just discovered that our stand up freezer wasn’t shut properly earlier today, and a lot of the stuff is partially dethawed. This would be extremely frustrating under normal circumstances, but I’m sure you can imagine why it’s nearly devastating right now. Do we have to turf everything or are there some foods we can refreeze without compromising safety (i.e., bread products)? Can we cook a bunch of stuff quickly and refreeze? It’s not about the inconvenience or even about the cost to replace all the food...it’s the ability to restock given the current situation. Just did a big shop over the weekend and stocked our freezer ;(.

I would think that cooking and refreezing would be fine. I’d also have no problem refreezing bread, stock, anything like that - basically anything other than meat.

Anything that isn't raw meat or dairy that was still partially frozen should be fine to refreeze. Meat and dairy I'd thaw, smell, cook, taste, then freeze.

Thanks for replying, everyone. After sorting through everything, it doesn’t seem as bad as I initially thought it would be. Turns out we have a LOT of bread products that I had forgotten about - whoops! ;). Ended up tossing a package of raw hamburger patties as they were completely soft and bloody, and also the remaining third of a box of chicken fingers that were also soft. Other than that, I am cooking up a few partially defrosted chicken breasts and tomorrow will cook a bag of shrimp and a teriyaki chicken crock-pot meal I had prepped prior to giving birth to my son last November. All other meat in the freezer is already cooked (chili) or was still frozen solid (would that still be safe?).

@MLE81: If it's still frozen solid you should be fine! And if pre-cooked items are partially thawed but still cold (like refrigerator cold) then again you should be ok, just make sure to re-heat thoroughly when you're making those dishes. Glad this wasn't as bad as you expected.
