1. For the first one we stayed at, we did see her, but it's because we needed a kitchen gadget that wasn't there and she was very upfront to reach out for anything (so we did! lol). For the latest two we stayed at, we never saw either of the owners/property managers. But, we did have their info in case we needed something.

2. I would just message them and be upfront about it.

3. I have never given any of them anything. The best thing you can do is cleanup when you leave, take out the trash, etc.

1. I've never seen a host, except to pick up or drop off a key and even that was rare. Most places I have rented have a lock box or a code.

2 If it's just a couple of extra kids, I probably wouldn't mention it to the host, but letting them know is probably the right thing to do especially since there might be restrictions around that sort of thing.

3. Never left a gift and actually never occurred to me that I should. I agree with what the others said, just clean up after yourself and leave things as you found them.

1. some hosts like to be there to greet you. i've had some hosts greet and others text me the key code.

2. i always let them know the exact number, even if they are kids. i found a place that says "sleeps 4" and when i asked if it was okay if we were a group of 6 but where 2 are kids under 5, they said no. I would not want to lie and have it held against me if they care.

3. just make sure you follow the instructions they leave you prior to leaving the place. i will make sure things are fairly neat, like putting all the towels in the laundry room, loosely making the bed, ensuring dishes are all in the dishwasher. imo, the ridiculous service and cleaning fees are enough of a thank you gift!

@Ajsmommy: as for #3, the best gift you could leave the host is a great review if you have a great experience.

@Ajsmommy: I think that’s a good idea. My parents got kicked out of an air b&b because my nieces came over and spent the night one night. They weren’t loud or anything, but the owner said it was against the rules

@Ajsmommy: I'm glad you are still able to rent the house you chose and I know it can feel a bit unfair to have to pay more $ for the same space you're comfortable sharing.
The cost of the rental also covers the use of utilities and resources though - so extra people (even kids) mean more water, more electricity, more laundry from towels, and more dishes washed which is one reason they may charge an additional amount.

We've rented four Air BnBs just this summer (my first times doing so). One as a group of adults for a bachelor/bachelorette beach getaway, two with family, and one solo for my husband and daughter. It's been smooth each time but we were very attentive to all the rules and everything was easy. No two rentals were the same as far as rules, amenities, pricing, etc, but they each were comfortable and a great experience. Good luck!
