I have been having similar issues with my LO this week. I am currently in his room & he cannot fall asleep. I'm starting to get desperate (hence why I'm in the room waiting for him to fall asleep). I'm just hoping it's a phase that will end soon.

Is she taking 1 nap or 2? It kind of sounds like she's just not sleepy enough, and if she's napping later than she needs to, that could throw things off.

Going to bed was hell for us for a while until my grandparents gave us the Scout dog (Leap Frog)- we let him play with only that and he falls asleep before very long. He loves to push the buttons and it plays soothing music, it works great on those nights that he isn't quite ready to sleep.

I have done pretty much the same thing as @brownie, if they aren't cooperating with the general routine I let them know that I will come back in a few minutes when they are ready. The child I usually used this tactic with loved the bedtime routine so usually she would play for a minute or two and then call out for me to come back and we would try again. Her parents were on board with cio but I try to avoid it so we would only go to that if she really wasn't cooperating. It didn't take too long for her to get the picture that if she laid nicely then I would rub her back and sit with her-- but we did have to go through the process again every few weeks/months when she would test the boundaries.

As far as bedtime goes, try tracking her sleep for a few days and watch for a pattern (I would record when that window is even if you miss it) then try starting the routine 15-20 minutes earlier. I have read that it should take about 10-15 minutes for a person's brain to relax enough for them to go to sleep, if it takes less time they probably should be going to bed earlier. I am always shocked at how kids seem wide awake and then BAM! they are ready for bed right now. It takes awhile to figure them out but it is worth it!
