DH & I found a dining table we love. Only problem is we need it to seat 8 at a minimum then expand to more with a leaf. Or at least seat 8 with a leaf. This only seats 6 with a leaf.
Please HELP! We love the plank top in particular.

That's our table! Or close to it... ours is by Ashley Furniture. I know when we got ours, they had one on display that seated more.

@locavore_mama: we got ours at homemakers so it was cheaper than the Ashley store. You can check their outlets if you have one nearby. We got ours 3yrs ago so it could very well be cheaper now!

Pottery Barn makes a table similar that seats up to 12. It's a bit more rustic looking though. And more expensive.

@locavore_mama: Ashley Furniture doesn't negotiate? Ours did. We just bought our couch and dinning table there and our sales rep was super nice and negotiated for us because she liked us and told us personally that there is always room for negotiation and we got a super deal on our stuff! Anyways FYI.

@Raindrop: this was a few years back. The guy told us their prices are "factory direct" so they don't negotiate. We walked right out. ;)maybe they have changed their policy? But good to know!

@mrs. wagon: LOL! Yes! Well, not IKEA obviously. But any other yes. Just negotiate like you will for anything else. The prices are HUGELY marked up. They also will likely give discounts if you're buying more than one item. Or tout that you will be a repeat customer because you're redoing say your whole bedroom. You might not be able to get a new wardrobe set now but in a few months you might.

@locavore_mama: Is this the case for all furniture stores?! We've bought a TON of things lately, all during big sales. But have never tried to negotiate?

@LindsayInNY: I don't think it would apply to bigger stores like Pottery Barn, Pier 1, Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, etc. But "smaller" furniture stores like Ashley, Value City Furniture, etc absolutely.

This is news to me, on negotiating with furniture stores!
I've bought from Ethan Allen and Thomasville, but the EA stuff was custom, and the fabric choices are what killed me.

@looch: I would/did negotiate at EA! hahaha I pretty much haggle everything. It's in my nature.
@LaughLines: thanks! But that's counter height. Our current table is counter and we want to go back to standard height.

@locavore_mama: It didn't even occur to me!
I did negotiate better deals from my painter, electrician and pretty much anyone that works on my house, so I guess, for me a furntiure store is like a clothes store. I don't bring my purchases up to the counter at Banana Republic and tell them my best offer, you know what I mean?

@looch: I definitely see your point. But to me a furniture, flooring store, etc where there is a sales person making some kind of commission is a little different.
Every piece of furniture in our house we got a deal on!

@locavore_mama: I think it is solid wood-- it is certainly very heavy! We've had it about 3.5 years and it seems to be holding up well, although honestly we don't eat at the table every night or anything. But spills wipe up and it hasn't gotten scratched at all yet. My only real complaint is that the ridges between the boards are annoying. They get crumbs in there EVERY MEAL and so after every meal i have to wipe down the table and run my finger nail through every crack to get all the crumbs out. Might be extra-annoying with kids.

@Mae: hm. That is a VERY good point! And I love the look of dining table without a tablecloth.....definitely something to consider.

@mrs. wagon: Here is my story I think we were just "lucky", We were looking at a new couches for a while but nothing really seemed to fit what we wanted and the price we could afford even with haggling at some places.
We walked in to Ashelys and was greeted right away by a sales lady, she asked what we were looking for and our price range. I think she really liked us because a lot of times she said oh this couch is going to be this much... but I can give you a better deal. We wanted an L shaped couch for less than 1500. We found a sectional create your own with a side couch, love seat, cuddlier and ottoman and it was going to be 1600 but she asked her manager to have it for 1300, she said she wanted to leave a buffer for him to push back up but he was fine with 1350. So we got it, it was the best price we came by for what we wanted and more!
We actually went back to get a dinning table too. We got the same sales lady and we found a table we liked, it was listed for 1200 table with 4 chairs... we were able to haggle it down to 900 dollars for a table and 6 chairs.
The prices are really marked up. I just looked online for prices and the couch we actually got at a good price but the table set it looks like I can get for 500 dollars (table + 4 chairs) online from a non-ashely's website.
It never hurts to haggle I think.

@locavore_mama: same as Mae! We've had ours for 3 years and it had held up well. We don't eat at it very often but I do think it scratches pretty easily. It's not the highest quality - but definitely very heavy and worth the price!
