DH and I need to replace our soffit and fascia and while we are at it, we will repaint our porch and shutters. We are trying to decide between white trim and black shutters or grey trim with grey shutters. He did up a quick photoshop (so don't zoom in and laugh!) and I wanted to ask your opinions! The first picture is what it looks like currently, but we both don't like the taupe colour. Which do you prefer for a new look?

If you go with white, I'd change up the color the shutters. I just personally think the white with black shutters looks dated. And I'm not sure about that color gray with your brick color.

The gray is too much gray.
What about gray shutters with white trim?
Also what color are your window panes?

We have a red brick colonial too. We have black shutters and a black front door all with white trim.. Love the classic look.

I love how the white brightens it up. I'm not sure I love it with the black shutters, but I don't know what other colour is suggest instead.

@MrsB2012: I know! I'm trying to think of other colours we could do as well. I'm open to something fun and colourful. Inside, our walls are all grey tones and we don't want to do any brown tone (although our brick does have brown in it).

What about a pale greenish gray for the shutters and door? With the white trim.

I think the white trim with black shutters is pretty classic. I've seen some brick houses with brown shutters that look nice too.

I like the white trim but not sure about black shutters. Your brick has a red undertone. How about deep red shutter or brown?

What about using ivory for the trim to soften it but still make it more bright and fresh than the taupe. And maybe navy shutters or door?
Eta: I like the idea of greenish grey for the shutters as well

I would go with off white trim and window trim, charcoal grey shutters, and a would play around with the color of the door. Maybe a navy or red door?

I like the shutters of the second picture with cream trim. Do you by chance read Maria Killiam's blog? She's a color expert who has great advice about just this kind of thing. I know she's done a few articles on exterior paint colors choosing the right color trim for your brick that would be worth a read.

@Mrs. Pickle: I love your suggestions. DH doesn't like the stark white so an off white would be nice. A red door would go well I think!
@peaches1038: I am totally digging the off white/ivory. I just can't picture a grey-green for the shutters. Maybe I'll have DH Photoshop that in and see what it looks like. Thanks!

@stiletto_mom: Brown is kinda a no-go for us. We aren't fans, even though there are brown tones in the brick. I could definitely do red shutters. We will do some more mock-ups and try it with red!

@lady baltimore: A couple of you have mentioned navy which we hadn't considered before but are definitely open to the idea. Navy and white would look nice. Just not sure of it with our brick colour!
@StrawberryBee: green-grey is another new idea! I'm so glad I posted to get new inspiration. I really can't picture that colour but I'll try to get some samples.
@Maysprout: I definitely am leaning towards white and black because I think it is a classic look too. The neighbours on either side have those colours so we just aren't sure if we should do something a little different!

@delight: we just went on a long walk so I was looking at all the houses. The ones near our neighborhood that are brick are mainly white (or just slightly off white) trim, black shutters, and used the door for a pop of color.
There were a couple that incorporated tan and there were a couple that were well done but the others still had some white trim too so to me it kinda looked weird with both white and tan. There were two with grey shutters and white trim. The one that had just been remodeled looked nice. The other one, still looked nice but bc it was surrounded by black shuttered neighbors and wasn't brand new it looked like it was kinda faded or dusty, like I looked twice to figure out if they were grey or just faded/dirty.
I hadn't thought much about trim shutters combo before and I'm not very stylish but that was my neighborhood and thoughts looking.

@delight: insomnia magic wand photoshop job--just an idea. what do you think of this as an alternative grey scheme? tonal warmer greys instead of the allover greenish-grey from your poll pic. I agree with a PP that the stark white looks a bit dated. I love your house though, so cute!
ETA: if you wanted to keep the shutters black, I think it might look nice to keep the tone of your current taupe and maybe just go for something more putty/grey/neutral with less yellowy brown in it?

I actually like the original color best. The white is too much of a contrast and the 2nd color is too dark

@Maysprout: I love that you were thinking of this On your walk! I am totally down with doing a pop of colour on the door. Based on poll results it's looking like white and black might win out for us. Most of our neighborhood has white and black too but there are a few grey and brown trimmed houses. I don't think trim is really the right word but don't want to write soffet and fascia and downspouts each time!!
@LCTBQE: I love that lighter grey colour you used! Thanks for Photoshopping our house too! I need to get samples of trim and see if there are different shades of grey. I definitely need to get rid of the taupe on the porch, I just don't like it at all but I do love grey!
@PurplePumps: I think white is classic too! I have never seen navy shutters on a house I don't think, at least not around my neighborhood but I'm totally open to that idea!
@Mrsbells: I don't think the original colour looks bad or anything, I just don't like that tone. Plus, we have to replace all the trim anyways so we just feel we might as well change things up a bit and make it "our own". We may try an off white so it's not to stark!
