Does anyone have any recommendations for detangling products? My 3.5 year old has long curly hair and after tossing and turning all night has a rats nest that is impossible to manage. So far I've tried Honest and No More Tears. I'll try anything!

Have you tried a Wet Brush? I have a mom friend with 3 girls and she SWEARS by it.

My DD has really curly hair, the biggest thing for DD is to use a ton of conditioner on her hair in the bath. Then in the morning we have two squirt bottles in her room - one is plain water and the other is water mixed with her regular conditioner. We always start with water and a wide tooth comb. If she needs more we shake the other bottle and start from the bottom and work our way up.
If it's not a bath night we use the water/conditioner spray at night too.

DD has fine thin hair, but I've used a wet brush along with sauve (the "free & clear" version) detangler! Her hair tends to get all sticky and gross at the ends.

I have very long, thick and curly hair which gets tangled super easily. I use the It's a 10 products and they work really well.
My daughter has thin and very soft hair but I use the same product on her and it works great! I've tried Pantene and No More Tears on her and it just doesn't compare.

We use a wet brush and this detangling conditioner spray by Alba. I always brush and spray at night before bed as well as in the AM for styling and that keeps tangles at bay. If we forget at night, it's a mess in the morning.

Definitely get a wet brush! My DD's hair gets so tangled at night and in the car seat (definitely rat nest level). I have a brush in the house and in the car now. It goes through the tangles like they are nothing.

"It's a 10"
you can get it at target. great detangler. I use it on myself.

@gingerbebe: we have 2 of them! It works wonders on my other daughters hair but not sure much on the long curly hair
@catgirl: I'll have to try a bunch of conditioner. Part of the problem with trying to comb it all out is that she doesn't want to sit (and it's very hard to wrangle her for long periods of time) long enough for me to work through it all.
@MRSKANSAS: I have some It's a 10. I hadn't even though of using it for her. I'll try it!

@Caly: My mom made me get perms as a kid (I know, I know) and two things worked for me:
1. If its in the morning, Infusium 23 with a wide comb (more painful, but it worked).
2. Equal parts hair gel (or mousse) with a thick conditioner worked through wet post-shower hair with fingers or wide tooth comb. Then put up in a bun. It would yield slightly damp but loose soft curls that didn't need much in the morning.

It's a 10 spray and tangle teaser or wet brush. My hair is super prone to tangles, and this is the best combo for me. My mom used to work as a hair stylist at a kids' salon and that's what she used there.

Another vote for its a 10, and I also have long, super thick curly hair, and that stuff just cuts right through it.

Oh man- I had a bottle of Its a 10 in my hand at target this week but didn't buy it. But I did get some suave kids detangling spray that smells good and seems to help a lot, along with a Wet Brush. My daughter's hair isn't long yet, but is quite curly and gets pretty rat's nest-y.

If it's curly maybe a wide tooth comb and not a brush st all? Also sleeping in a loose braid! And another vote for conditioner and water in a spray bottle.

It's a 10'was recommended to us when my daughter had waist length hair that tangled. Even though it's shorter now the wet brush and It's a 10 is my go to for both of my girls.

Comb her hair in the bath with conditioner. Then put it in a braid before bed.. It'll be detangled in the morning.

@Caly: my daughter has curly hair too & it was a fight every morning. I had a friend recommend putting it in a low braid after combing it out after shower & having her sleep in it. This has been a life saver for us. I take the braid out in the morning (to either re-do or style another way) & its tangle free!

@Pollywog: this!! I didn't read everything before posting but this absolutely works for us.

My daughter has very curly, long hair too. The Wet Brush is not really for super curly hair - I would try a Denman or wide toothed comb. I comb her hair when she's in the bath and it's very wet and coated with two palmfuls of conditioner. Then as others have said, I braid it before bed.

My daughter and I both have curly hair. For her, I wash and condition her hair (every other day or every 3 days), spray it with a detangler and comb it with a wide tooth comb. We only wash at night and let it air dry. I NEVER try to comb/brush it when dry because she has beautiful ringlets and they would be pulled out if I did.
nectarine / 2018 posts
Just to echo others you should never use a brush on curly hair. Stick to a wide tooth comb or just fingers.

@gingerbebe: I'll have to try Infusium. I don't know why I hadn't considered using normal non-child centered products on her hair!

So cozy brand curl products are my new go-to for my toddlers curls. I use the wet brush because she won't let me near her head with a comb. I try to wet it and braid it every night to help with morning tangles.

Have you tried having her sleep on a satin pillowcase? A good haircut / style might also help!

My 4 year old DD has very curly fine hair. She take a bath/shower at night. We use a leave in conditioner after she gets out and use a wet brush to detangle starting from the bottom and going up. I try to ensure her hair isn't wet but almost air dry before sleeping. Then in the morning we use a detangler spray and a bit of warm water and start from the bottom going up with the wet brush again. Since her hair is so fine, a wide tooth comb doesn't get the bad tangles out.

What kind of brush are you using? As a kid my mom always used the kind that had the little balls at the end of each bristle - which ripped the hair out of my head no matter how well brushed it was. I still don't use that kind to this day.
I use one like this:
http://img.aws.livestrongcdn.com/ls-article-image-640/cme/photography.prod.demandstudios.com/596b2a7d-a9cc-43b1-92cb-8393cfabb7d4.jpg
My bristles are plastic, but I think are supposed to mimic boar-bristles (or something like that). Anyways, it made a huge difference for me. I also suggest wetting her hair to brush it, even with just a spray bottle.
One more thing, my mom used to try to just put the brush on my scalp and pull down through my hair - that doesn't work! I have to lightly brush to get all the tangles out. I think of my hairs in layers or sections and brush accordingly.
Hope you find something that works!

@Mrs. Pickle: @gingerbebe: thank you SO much for the wet brush recommendation. I was dubious but it is awesome on DD's hair. She used to cry every morning when I used some DIY detangler and a comb. But now I don't need to use any product, just the wet brush. Super happy mama and LO!
