I am this way. I've adapted by becoming a question-asker. It helps when I'm trying to start a conversation. In advance of the function I think through questions I can ask people about themselves or about what they think about current events etc. People generally like to talk about themselves, so it usually works. It also helps to be prepared with an answer for yourself in case they throw the same question back at you.

Another strategy of mine: Look for the other quiet person sitting by themselves and try talking to them. You probably have more in common with that person than anyone else!

I don't have a lo yet, but I totally look forward to this. I'm like you, not the most extraverted person in the bunch... And to me, small talk can be painfully awkward. It seems like it will be easier when I have a little one to take care of, or even talk about!

@artbee: I'm the exact same way. I'm so glad I have a baby, now I have someone to hang out with when were at parties or family gatherings!

Our LO isn't here yet but I can totally see my husband doing this. Personally I looove parties. I could talk to strangers for hours. Hubs HATES it. He does the same thing as @Jumpingjacks: where he thinks up questions to ask people in advance. It helps him out. I swear he does this even when we are grabbing dinner with our best friends.
