Picture it: Hubs and I have just gotten married and are buying our first set of real grown up furniture together. We fall in love with a gorgeous pub-height table. I won't go into obsessive detail, but we had it custom made for us, it wasn't cheap and reallyreally like it (aka we don't want to sell it and buy a new table). Unfortunately, it is about the least baby friendly decorating decision we could have made...fast forward 2 years to life with baby, we need to add a high chair, and now I've got a (design) problem!
Currently we're feeding BabyEllie (not her real name, btw) her daily solids in a Bumbo seat on the floor. But as she eats more often (and as her meals start to contain messier, stain-prone foods), I'd like to get eating at or near the table top, which is about 37" off the ground.
It seems like the simple solution would be to get a clip-on chair that attaches to the table itself, but our table has both a wooden "skirt" along the bottom and a tempered glass "topper" over the wood due to the fact that there's a cut-out box in the center where we display seasonally appropriate stuff (eg, I'm about to switch from wine corks to Christmas ornaments). Sooo...I don't think the clip on option will work. Realistic options seem to be:
- Pedestal style chair (like the Bloom Fresco) with a pneumatic lift - the chair would be level with our table. I like the look of these chairs, but they cost approx. $250-$500, which seems kind of crazy for something that is going to get food all over it.
- Booster seat (like the Fisher Price Space-Saver) - my only concern is that the base of it might be just slightly too wide for our chairs, or that it might damage the seat of the chair (leather). But aesthetically, I'm fine with a seat like this.
- Pick a random high chair that isn't hideous or ridiculously expensive, and don't worry about whether it is level with the table for now. If I go this route, when baby is bigger I'll probably use a fabric TotSeat on one of the adult chairs for her.
On top of all this, BabyEllie is pretty tiny for her age (4.5 months, looking to start the chair by 6 months), so I don't even know if the SpaceSaver or TotSeat will be a valid option for awhile, even if they do work with our table. ACK!
Apologies for the long winded post....can you tell I've been obsessing about this?! Any advice about the tall table situation or these types of high chairs in general will be VERY appreciated.
