LO is 15 months old and at her 15 month well check her new doctor noticed she had a hip click. He sent her for a scan and today she was referred to a specialist at our local children's hospital. I didn't get much information, but they mentioned hip dysplasia. She doesn't see the specialist until January so now I get to worry until then. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm hoping they are just sending her to be cautious!

R was sent to a pediatric orthopedist at 6 weeks old for possible hip dysplasia. He's having her come back at 6 months old after Christmas. She would've been fit with a harness if he thought it was necessary at our last appointment. Now I'm pretty sure the harness isn't an option anymore. It might be a cast if he thinks it's warranted.
The pediatric orthopedist seemed to think that many children are sent to him out of an abundance of caution though. I'll let you know what happens on the 30th with R. Don't worry till January because there's nothing you can do now.

I had a pretty severe case when I was born breach and had a brace. I was pretty unaffected by it until my 20s. I had a periacetabular osteotemy in my mid 20s and feel fabulous now (have raced triathlons, snowboard, golf, etc). Long story short -- find a world class orthopedic surgeon. I feel like mine was a pretty extreme case though. But feel free to wall me if you want any more information.

@Bao: No, very rarely. I'm the only person I know who has had to resort to surgical intervention, but I'm pretty sure its mostly hereditaty (my mom and grandpa have both had hip replacements). And my surgery was to realign my joint and to postpone (hopefully prevent entirely) a total hip replacement. My first doc was convinced I'd need a hip replacement by 30. So glad I found a doc knowledgable in adult hip issues. I'm sure your LO wont have such a severe case! But even in a worst case scenario, I'm totally fine now thanks to a fabulous doctor!

Our son has so far not experienced a hip click (despite being breech) but our pediatrician ordered us to take him for an ultrasound at 3 months (next week) just to be sure. I know how you may be feeling, but what I tried to remind myself while I was pregnant was that of all things your child could have that are bad, this was one of those easy to fix ones. I'll keep my fingers crossed you get good news!

My nephew had it when he was born and they put him in a brace for a couple months.
He is now 12 and has no issues with his hip.

Hi! I actually have hip dysplasia but it wasn't diagnosed as an infant. I learned about it when I was 14 and started running hurdles on my HS track team. It was bothersome but not unbearable.
Then around when I turned 28/9 I started noticing a lot of pain when I walked. I ended up having a hard time walking a few blocks without pain. I have labral tears in both hips as a result. Tried to get one side fixed but because of the dysplasia it retore 2 years post surgery and will probably continue to do so. At this point my surgeon said I should wait it out until I need a full replacement.
My husbands cousins also had a little girl and around 1 year old they discovered she had pretty severe dysplasia (they discovered it once she started walking a lot). She ended up having surgery to correct it and spent months in a cast from her chest down. However, she was happy and pleasant and now another year later she's perfectly fine!
I guess my point is that if your LO does need surgery, its probably better to do it now when she's little and won't remember it, rather than as an adult when it can really start bothering her, impacting her day-to-day, surgery is a bigger deal (in terms of impacting her life), etc.
I'm not a doctor nor a mother though (yet) so I am just giving my opinion as a gal with dysplasia. I wish I had been diagnosed at a younger age and had it taken care of then. Because now it will continue to impact me in many ways as an adult. -
Do you swaddle? I read an article that said that the increase in swaddling is also causing an increase in hip dysplasia... not sure if its true or not.

@Bao: A had it from birth and was treated for 14 weeks in a Pavlik harness. At 12 months she's walking like a superstar

Unless there is some obvious outward sign of possible dysplasia, like, say, uneven thigh folds, I don't know how the docs would know? I am so sorry you are going through this . . . I hope it turns out to be nothing!

I'm not going to be able to sleep the next 5 weeks until her appointment. I joined some support groups and they said that since she's already being sent to a specialist and her scan was abnormal that chances are good she has hip dysplasia or else they wouldn't be sending her. All the treatments for her age require her to be put under, surgeries, casts etc. I'm trying to stay optimistic but it's hard because if they are "just being cautious" then why would they send her? He said her scan was abnormal so something is obviously there...I feel like they left me hanging and I'm feeling so overwhelmed

I think they didn't catch it sooner because they don't actively screen for it in the US. My son was screened before we left the hospital and again at his 4 week well visit with a formal diagnostic test. Since he showed no other signs, they didn't formally screen again, but would if they had cause for concern.

I hope everything is ok for her.
I just had a baby 5 days ago and she was screened for it via hip ultrasound. It was an optional test at the hospital, and luckily she is fine. I did see a few newborns wearing braces though.

@Bao: I just saw this and I'll be thinking of you. My brother had a club foot as a baby. One of the things the doctors asked for was video of him walking so they could watch his gate. At the office he was obviously too shy so my parents would record it at home and then take in with them. Maybe call ahead and see if there is anything you can do like that to prepare for the meeting.
