Aside from gifts for day care workers and nannies, who else do you tip extra to or give a gift to around the holidays? And how much? I'm thinking of people like cleaning person, hair dresser, dog walker, etc. (I don't have all of those!) I also have a laundry delivery person. Is money better than a gift or is it the thought that counts?

Er. I don't have anyone like that but I think $ is always best!

Do you have older kids? We always gave a gift card to the school bus driver. Also to the UPS guy because we get a lot of packages.

I think money is best. We're giving the daycare a packaged gift as well as some cash.

I think this year we're tipping our dog groomer (I'm aware that our dog is terrified of her but she does a great job anyway) and our UPS and Fedex guys because they're so awesome. I figure cash is best because they can put it towards something they want.

I haven't with my hair dresser in the past because it's so expensive anyways! This year I won't see her around the holidays anyways.
I have to do something for the cleaning lady and the laundry delivery guy, especially since we're on the 4th floor of a walk up. I figured cash would be best but not sure how much.

I might do something little for the cleaning lady but that is all. I should do the UPS guy but we have two that come, sometimes middle of the day and sometimes at night. Might leave the post man something.

My Dad is a USPS letter carrier, and his fave 'gifts' are either cash (duh), Starbucks gift cards, homemade fudge, nice coffee beans, cookie plates, boxed chocolate.

@sunny: They leave it in the mailbox with a tag that says "For our mailman" or something similar. I'm a bad mailman's daughter - I've never given a gift to our mailman.

@jedeve: Ooohhh, well, in that case I wouldn't even worry about it. My dad got a lot of gifts/tips because he had the same route every day, and he did a lot for his customers (would add postage when they were short, deliver mail to their door during bad weather so they didn't have to go out, deliver mail to the door of older people, remembered everyone's names, etc). If you are on a temp/training route, common practice is to share gifts - they do a good job of splitting what they communicably receive. BUT, then you're giving a gift/tipping someone who's really just doing their job, and not giving you any sort of extra special service that you appreciate.

I always give cash. Cleaning lady, garbage men, mailman, UPS guy, dry cleaning guy etc.

We only have a gardener who mows and edges once a week-- we're giving him $50 (about what we pay per month). We have no other regular service people.

@LindsayInNY: I don't really know. We just go with what we're comfortable with. $30-$100 or so depending on how often we see them. So more for a mailman since he comes every day, but less for the UPS guy since he is not daily. But I think for a weekly cleaner it would be one week's pay.
