We got ours a few months ago... But we are going to a small airport that only has one direct flight a day from our city, and it's a small plane and pricing only goes up! With Southwest always book early, and if the price drops you can cancel and rebook no penalties. Also, use the kayak flight predictor tool to check your route and see what it recommends. Good luck!

We always wait for southwest sales. They had an amazing sale a few weeks ago and my parents booked their holiday flights to come here.

@Truth Bombs: @Mrs. Microscope: I've never flown southwest with kids. It will be with a lap "infant" and 3 yr old. Opinions? And I've only flown southwest once before! Usually JetBlue is just as cheap for my route and I vastly prefer JetBlue especially with kids for how roomy their seats are!

@regberadaisy: I've had nothing but good experiences flying Southwest with LO as a lap infant or a seated toddler (once she needed her own seat we started always bringing her car seat on and installing it in the seat). Our favorite thing about southwest is that you can cancel your flight any time with a full credit which is awesome since you just never know what will happen when kids are involved.

@BananaPancakes: wow! Very interesting. Thank you! We actually decided it didn't make sense for me to extend my stay since the kids will be in school.

@regberadaisy: I'd do it as early as possible. Sometimes Tuesday's or Wednesdays have lower prices. I wouldn't wait for a sale becaus holidays are typically black out dates anyways.

We booked as soon as we had firm travel dates. Being able to get the most convenient flights outweighs the possibility of saving a few bucks (not that I've ever found fares to be cheaper as that link indicates -- but maybe I've just been unlucky).
