Do you have an HOA? Have you ever done anything that they didn't approve and went slightly past your HOA rules?

The HOA is the bane of our existence. The rules are strict: no doghouses, no clothes lines, no garden art above 12", every exterior remodeling decision (new windows, front door, lights, paint) has to be approved by a committee. We also have to have our house sided in cedar -- which means it gets painted every couple of years -- no low maintenance vinyl siding here!
We sometimes "forget" about the rules and have done things like cut down smaller trees without permission and replace our front porch with Trex, removing the old stained lumber. I also have "tall" garden art -- it's my way of being just a little bit subversive.

@Mrs. Tricycle: I don't understand why it takes so long to get things approved, too! There is a shed we want. We got it approved if it is 8ft at it's highest point. The one we want is 10ft at it's highest point. I just want to go for it but don't want to be fined for the rest of the time we live in this house!!

No. We would be in trouble all of the time! We strive to keep a tidy inside & outside, but I'm prone to eclectic tastes and sudden changes. I'd be public enemy number 1!

Our HOA is awesome. Then again, there are only 2 units and since we have the larger condo, we have 51% of the vote ;p

We pledged when we got married that we'd never live in a place with an HOA!

Our HOA is currently the reason why we are looking to move out of our house that we've only owned for 2 1/2 years. Never again will we make the mistake of living in one!

We have an HOA and I don't mind it. They keep the neighborhood looking nice, we have a park and a pool, and they come around and spray for mosquitoes. We plan to paint our shutters and trim and we'll have to get it approved. I'm sure I'll be annoyed when that happens.

I really dislike the whole HOA thing. So far we haven't had major issues, but I would love to go crazy making our house artsy fartsy and I know we'll just never be allowed to do that.
When we moved in we called and asked if there are restrictions on outside paint colors. They said that it had to be a color that goes with the surrounding nature. Could they get any more vague? I wanted green and yellow, and of course I can find those colors in nature so we went for it. And then neighbors complained that they were too bright, but the HOA guy said that they can't make us change it. So we didn't.
We also put up a piggy mailbox in March. I thought for sure we'd get complaints about that, but not yet!

I can't stand HOAs. It's one of my requirements that we NOT have an HOA at whatever neighborhood we move to.
Nothing would annoy me more than having someone tell me I wasn't allowed to do something with my own damn property.
