I always clean everything too. Though I'm the one always asking for tours.

If it's a person who's never been over before, I like to show off my house.

It does throw me off guard when MIL or SIL ask to see upstairs to check out whatever work we've been doing. Uumm... I haven't picked up my underwear off the floor yet, and L's room is a mess, and there's a load of towels on the floor in the hallway!

I never ask! If they offer, I'll look. I always try to pick up each room to make it presentable if people are coming over though.

It is rude I mean, I'd never ask unless when I made plans I said something, "hey can I come for a housewarming visit?" And brought a gift.
But, either way: I usually clean the whole house just in case! You never know were a guest will end up.

I would never ask for a tour. While our house stays pretty much picked up, there are places that are likely not picked up just before people come over (like our bathroom . . . there is probably still stuff on the counter and toys strewn about from LO playing while I get ready . . . and the office probably has a ton of paperwork out (and boxes waiting to go down to the basement in it), and I would be horribly embarrassed if someone sprung a tour request on me.

I am fine with showing people around but not into the master. I feel like that is a private zone so I have only shown a few people. It works out because most of our bedrooms are on the main level with our master being upstairs so I just say "oh yeah, my master is up there" and change the subject.

I kind of agree it's a little rude, unless its a new house/housewarming party. Though, at the same time I don't mind if someone pokes around a little bit since we keep our house pretty clean. I would just never ask myself!

I don't ask, but I LOVE looking at houses. (I browse the mls page for fun )
I do pick up every room before we have company.

I always clean because DH tends to offer tours, and not just for first time visitors. He will show people projects he has done since they were last visiting.

I don't think it's rude! I love seeing friends new homes and oohing and aahing. People are always excited to show off their homes. I have no problem showing mine, even if it is messy. It's a home with a toddler. Deal. But I've lived here 6 years now, so I don't really have "new" guests

I don't think it's rude either; it's natural that people want a tour and I love to give them! One of our spare rooms is totally empty anyway!
