I guess his mother placed him on the railing to get a better look. So horrific. A reminder to never skirt safety precautions for a better photo op or view...cant imagine what this mother must be going through...

I just saw this as well. I don't understand the behavior that some parents exhibit with their children at the zoo. Banging on the glass, hoisting them up on a dangerous railing, etc. Why does this happen?

I can't even bring myself to read it. It makes me sick to think about how the mother is feeling and that poor baby. I cannot imagine basically watching my child die, not being able to do anything about it, and knowing I helped it happen. Horrible.

This is horrible! It makes me so sad to think that poor child was killed in such an awful situation while there were tons of people around who couldn't do anything. How awful.
Just goes to show that those safety rules are there for a reason...

This story made me very sad as well, the poor little boy.. I'm sure the mother is beside herself with grief and guilt. There seem to be more zoo accidents in the news these days.

wow, i can't even imagine what the family is going through, but WHY in the world would you put your child up on top of an exhibit like that?! even if it weren't dangerous animals on the other side, the fall alone would seriously injure him.

It's awful! When I first read it, my first thought was, well, what was the parent doing-- assuming they must have hoisted them up or something (this was before they said she had put him on the rail for a better view). Then I thought about it more and realized she must just be in agony, however it happened, but it does remind me that you cannot be too careful, even if something seems like it would be safe.

@Foodnerd81: I agree... at first, I thought 'how could she...', but then I realized that it's a tragic accident and hindsight is always 20/20.
@highwire: Yeah, I've seen some pretty appalling, dangerous behavior. Some people so lack common sense.

@Foodnerd81: I pretty much had the same reaction. But like you, I quickly realized that no matter how the tragedy happened, it is a tragedy and that poor mother is going through grief we can't even begin to imagine.

@MungBean: we might think that on the outside... but how many times have we helped kids "get a better look" at things without even thinking! I think it was just an unconscious decision..
didn't read the article... hate those kinds of stories the poor mother.

This is so awful. I can't imagine the grief the mom and dad must both be dealing with right now.
I can't help but think my reaction might just be to jump in and attempt to save my kid even if, thinking logically, it likely would only result in me dying or being severely injured, too.

Oh my goodness. Reading this made me want to cry.
