Did you dress your newborn in clothing at the hospital? We just used diapers and the hospital swaddles last time but I was wondering if it would be good to have some kimono tops, onesies or sleepers? Our own swaddles? Did anyone find anything helpful to have?

They were checking his heart and temp and stuff so often that between that and skin to skin nursing I didn’t see the point. We just did diapers and swaddles until we brought them home.

Any particular reason you would want to do so? We just did the hospital diapers and swaddles last time and planning to do the same this time around.

Our hospital provided side snap kimono tops that they both wore in the hospital with diapers and swaddles. I didn’t dress either of them until we left. Too much work when they were so floppy and being checked and changed all the time. Then again I didn’t put real clothes on me until I left the first time either.

Same as most above - DD just wore a diaper, hat, and swaddle. We put her in clothes to leave the hospital but that's it.

Yep diaper hat and swaddle.
And something non-fussy to take LO home in.
My goal with this pregnancy is to get myself out of the awful hospital gown and into something comfortable yet presentable. I still cringe looking at pics of myself (thank god LO was adorable) -
LO1 was given a gown to wear in the hospital but we ended up ditching it and just using a swaddle.
LO2 was born at the same hospital as LO1 but they had stopped offering the gowns so we also just swaddled him. I prefer it this way.
I also didn’t dress myself until I let the hospital as it was easier. I also pretty much didn’t have any visitors so what was the point

@tillma: I always take some clothes but for both babies they stayed in hospital clothing and blankets til it was time to go home

Our hospital provided kimono tops and diapers. I took my own swaddle (the summer infant Velcro ones) and a going home outfit (basically a footed sleeper). That’s it.

@PawPrints: as I said we just went naked last time but clothing is on just about every pack for the hospital list I come across so I was beginning to wonder if I was missing something
I will say I wasn’t a fan of the flannel swaddles last time so I’m going to bring our own muslin ones to use here and there. The flannel ones were so bulky I didn’t feel like I could get close to my baby, especially when they would double or triple wrap him.

Ours had kimono tops for them too.

I brought a zip-up NB carter's sleeper since they have the foldover mittens built into the sleeper. I used the hospital blankets for swaddling while we are there.

I bought clothes and blankets for all 3 of mine. I wanted to use their own things in addition to the blankets provided by the hospital. I took onesies, gowns, and swaddle blankets. All 3 of mine spit up a lot so it was definitely used.

@tillma: I always assumed those lists are referring to the going-home outfit. I remember how bizarre it felt dressing DD in her onesie the first time ever, after two days in the hospital swaddles. DH and I just standing there like, are we really just supposed to push her tiny arms and legs into these sleeves?
Good point about the blankets being difficult to swaddle with. I could see it being useful to bring our own swaddles (all zipper and velcro tabs), though she did look incredibly cute when the nurses would do the professional-level swaddle with the little animal blanket.
I also wore nothing but the gown for the entire stay! And even that was usually half hanging off me. Lots of skin to skin and desperately learning how to breastfeed.

I also brought my own nipple shield and paci. DS1 didn't like the Soother ones (and ultimately didn't like any pacis), so I brought a MAM one I got for free as a sample for DS2 and he really liked it in the hospital (when mommy needed a break from nursing, ow).
The hospital hats never stayed on my kid's heads so I liked taking my own. The kind that are hand knit actually stay on my kids heads better.

Our hospital provides the first top, although for some reason DD's never fit well and we ditched it fast. I did have one shirt with me, but it was more for the cuteness than because we actually needed it.
Onesies are a pain though, because of the belly button. Clothes that open in front work better.

Our son was a 35 week preemie so we did dress him in short sleeve onesies plus the swaddle and a hat to keep him warm. At home, where we had more control over the temp, we barely put him in any clothes other than a swaddle ha

we only brought going home clothes. hospital provided other things and then my girls both ended up under the bili lights so they couldn't wear clothes at all.

I brought sleepers, swaddles, hats, bows, and a going home outfit. I brought so much because DD was having photos taken at the hospital. I had to ask my MIL to bring some larger sleepers once we got to the postpartum room because DD was over 10 pounds at birth.

I totally dress my babies! They look cuter, and the nurses don't mind opening a sleeper to check a heart rate

@MsMini: I’m glad to see I’m not the only one. My first was a NICU baby and it was an exciting milestone to see him in his first clothes! I plan to take clothes to the hospital for #2.

@jhd: I am an NICU nurse and once babies are medically stable I totally promote dressing them! We have cute regular (ie not hospital issues) clothes that we get specially laundered in our NICU and my favourite thing is surprising parents with getting them in their first real outfits!

that has to be a tough job. I will never forget our NICU nurses. And the day they surprised us by putting our little guy in a little T-shirt was just one of the many things they did to brighten our time there. plus I have to dress our newest little one when he comes. Big brother is 3 and just shocked that his baby brother has no clothes on inside my tummy! -

No way! Why create extra laundry for myself? My hospital used kimono tops, and I didn't fully dress myself or the baby until it was time to go home. I did bring my own hats though, with their names in them.

Our hospital did an arms/ chest down swaddle. He was dressed in a kimono top and socks. We just brought two going home outfit options.

DS wore the hospital issued kimono top and socks and was usually swaddled in a blanket. The going home outfit I brought ended up being too big so he only wore the top home. We were team green so I did bring in a few headbands in case we had a little girl.

No clothes for either baby until going home day. I liked doing lots of skin to skin and they were fine in kimono shirts and a blanket.

I only brought a going home outfit, my kiddos were naked in just a swaddle until they went home!
