The cleaning lady whom we interviewed last night left a horrid stink behind, a combination of sweat and fragrance. Mostly sweat. Last night I thought maybe I was having some kind of pregnancy hot flash but today I realized it's seriously embedded in the area where she sat. DH wants to cry because that's his spot and he hates fragrance as much as I do. (We are obviously not hiring her after all.) What can I do other than Febreze? It's definitely not a washable fabric.

I have no advice, but OMG, what a nightmare! Is there anywhere you can leave a review for her to warn other people?

there is unscented febreeze. It's AWESOME. Most smells give me a headache but this doesnt really have a smell at all (other than right when it comes out of the spray bottle, but it disappates in about 3 seconds).
Whoever invented febreeze actually had it unscented first, but added the scent because otherwise no one believed it worked.

maybe try sprinkling it with baking soda, letting it set for a while to absorb the smell, then vacuuming?

When LO had a throwing up phase we used a combo of Febreze and Resolve.
We used the Resolve that foamed up for 20 minutes and vacuum, then did a light coating of Febreze. The next day the smell was gone.

@MaryM: that would be my suggestion too! Or unscented carpet powder that you can vacuum up?

Try Nature's Miracle (should be available at pet stores) - it works great on dog pee, so I can only imagine it would do the same with sweat?

I just read the description and it works for any organic smells / stains. Sounds like it'll work!

A quick google search turned up either sprinkling with baking soda and letting it sit overnight and then vacuum it off in the morning. Or spraying it down with vodka.

@bakerbee we use nature's miracle with our dog, but i recently found arm & hammer pet stain and odor removal and it works better (and faster) than nature's miracle. Unfortunately, we are using it all the time right now because our pup has a sensitive stomach.

@MrsPastryLady: I generally use Zep for any tougher surfaces but kept the Nature's Miracle around because I was afraid fabrics like this weren't really meant for harsh solvents.

@spaniellove: Sweet! We usually coat it in it and put a towel underneath to soak up the yuckyness (fancy word right there).

- my golden has a super sensitive stomach and can't even eat rawhides. We found out it was a grain allergy and changing her food has helped a lot.

What kind of fabric is it?
Could you even make a baking soda like paste and put it on there?
Maybe a really hot damp bath towel to try to steam it out?

@MrsPastryLady: Our dog went through that for a long time and the vet decided to treat it with only Pepcid and breaking up her feedings. It seemed to coincide with anxiety attacks, strangely! I hope your doggie gets better soon!

I just want to chime in that you can add a few drops of essential oil to the baking soda if you want some sort of pleasant fragrance.

I use to use baking soda carpet cleaner on my rug - I would leave it on for an hour and then vacuum. It would probably work on a couch too.

@bakerbee we've been adding fiber to all of her meals and now she is getting a probiotic which i think is helping, but some days she just seems to get sick for no reason, which always makes me sad. The winter really didn't help because we couldn't really take her outside because she doesn't have an undercoat so would get too cold (even with a doggy jacket on), so i think it caused some anxiety issues
@spaniellove let me know how it goes. I have only used the arm & hammer remover on carpets, but doesn't seem to have hurt the carpet.

@T.H.O.U.: It's a woven fabric with kind of a loose weave? Which is why I'm afraid to grind anything into the threads.

@spaniellove: Yea. I would maybe try steaming it. This sounds silly, but do you have a steam mop you could hold up close to the fabric? like obviously not touching but close enough to get steam to the fabric?

@spaniellove: can you have the cushion cover dry cleaned? Or, call the manufacturer and have them make a new cushion cover?
I'd be leery of spraying anything on it...even if you get the smell out, it could leave a water stain.

I know this is an old post but we use diluted vinegar in a spray bottle - it works wonderfully!!!!
