I suggested my husbands brothers first name (he passed away when they were 12) and he was first against it, thinking it might be too sad. But then as he thought about it more and more he agreed.
If we have another he wants me to pick a family name from my side. If we have a boy it would be my dads middle name and if it's a girl it would be the first name of one of my grandmas (both had perfect names for a middle name).

1st: Family significance. His middle name, Charles, is my MIL's maiden name.
2nd: Just because we liked it. DH was dead set on Grace as a first name, and I chose the middle. I wanted a name that started with E, so her initials would be GEM. I chose Eleanor because of Eleanor Roosevelt. I found out later that my paternal great-grandmother's middle name was Eleanor, but I didn't know it at the time.

Family name. It's an extremely classic name though so I'm pretty sure it's a family name for everyone.

@josina: Aww, K's middle name is Grace
We took a big risk here... We always felt that we were gonna have two girls. So K has DD2's first name's meaning and DD2 will have K's first name's meaning as her middle name.

The initial is of family significance but the actual name I just liked. So a little of both.

The first DH wanted to use his first name as a middle. The second LO1 picked. I feel bad but I still don't love the name as much as DH and LO lol.

@FaithFertility: @snowjewelz: Maybe Grace would be in honor of the Dec14 girls then.

Lo's middle name is my MIL's name. I don't love the name, but I love my MIL!

DD1: we just liked it. It was the name we were initially considering for her first name but it got moved to her middle name.
DD2: we just really liked it. Again, it was going to be her first name but got moved to her middle name.
DS: family significance. His middle name will be DH's first name (DH shares his first name with his Dad and his Grandfather, etc...so it was a big deal to use a different first name)

Picked it because we liked it and wanted a name with several syllables since his first and last both have two. Found out after the fact that it was my grandma's grandpa's name so not a close relative, but my grandparents thought it was neat.

DS's middle is his dad and grandfather's middle and DD's is after my nana, who was a kickass lady.

Ds has my grans middle name which was her moms maiden name. His first name is my husbands grandpas name.
Dd has my sisters name for her middle. Family tradition that the first girl gets named after the maternal aunt. Her first name is just one we likes.
Future kids will probably have my maiden name for a middle for a girl and DHs first name or his grandpas name for a boy.

LO1- Intentional family significance, he is named for my maternal grandfather.
LO2- Mostly just a name that my husband loves but it happens that the initial is significant for my paternal grandmother. We struggled with his middle name as we had originally planned to name him after a family member but could not get behind the actual name. If I had had my way, I would have given him my maiden name for his middle name but my husband did not love that as much.

DD1 we couldn't agree on a middle name. Ultimately, DH let me have my choice and it was just a name I liked. DD2's middle name is after my MIL.

We picked "just because" names because the only family names we liked are boy names and we have a girl (and pregnant with girl #2).
I have to say I am partial to Grace for a middle name anyway- baby #2 will be Julia Grace!

I didn't want to honor family members because we couldn't honor everyone and someone was bound to get offended.
DS - Just a name we liked. It was my first choice as a first name but we couldn't think of a good middle to go with it, so it got moved to middle.
DD - Since DS's name is Irish (part of my background) DH wanted her name to be somewhat Italian for his heritage. My mom had been reading some genealogy stuff and mentioned her grandmother's name, which was Italian. We liked it a lot and thought it was fitting.

dd1: family name - my great grandma's last name/grandma's maiden name. (tradition for first born female to have it.)
dd2: DH's brother's name who passed away when hey were kids. It's a very masculine name, but we wanted to use it regardless of gender...and I think her full name is kick ass together
