Starting at age 9 I had a bunch of paper routes, and then in junior high I snuck soda into school to sell to other kids. Also, I was allowed to keep any money I earned from piano competitions.
How did you earn money as a kid?

I didn't, lol. I babysit some during high school, but not a huge amount. My first job was at age 15.

Chores, babysitting and later, my dad very very kindly paid me to help him out in his sign shop. I did that for years and never got better at it. There were so many things I told him he didn't have to pay me for because I messed them up & he still always did. He had just the right amount of teaching me responsibility while also being generous.

Babysitting, chores, and allowance. I had my first real job the summer after Sophomore year of HS as a receptionist and worked 40 hour weeks for 10 weeks.
Oh, and starting 8th grade I cleaned my Granny's house 2x/month and did her gardening 2x/month which earned me about $40/week averaged out.

Before I was old enough to babysit I would clean my parent's house for $15 a week and I used to store the cans for recycling all year long and I got to keep the money they brought in (it was always close to $200 bucks!)
Once I was 12 I babysat for neighbors kids and then at 14 I started at Dairy Queen. I was always about having money of my own

I heard an old lady say ''when you get your first £100 the thousands come easy''. So at age 10 I set off to get those £thousands. I washed glasses and stacked bottles in my nanna's pub and did the upstairs chores plus cooking. And helped in my aunt's hairdressing salon. I became a complete workaholic and saved every penny I earned, determined to reach that £100 which I did by age 16. My sister had an emergency and I loaned her £60. I went to Canada at age 17 and left my bankbook with her for her to pay what she owed me. I was devastated on my return to UK to find that not only had she not paid in what she owed, but she had taken out the other £40 to treat herself to clothes.
I thought of all the things I did without, and all the hard working hours I had put in as a child, only to end up with nothing while she flounced about in her new clothes, gloating. She said ''you're just a soft ar*e, there's nothing you can do about it''.
The memory of this still causes a pang of pain all these years later.

I babysat a ton and made really good money! I always had money to spend back then! My first "real job" was teaching swimming lessons on the weekends.

This going to sound weird but my mom would pay us 10 cents for every white hair we plucked from her head. Yup...
That was the only reliable way of getting some money. We tried to get paid for chores but it never happened.
Then I got a real job when I turned 14.

My parents owned a daycare and starting in 5th grade, I had to clean the girls bathroom every single day after school. My brother had to do the boys bathroom, so his job was worse since these were toddlers whose aim wasn't so great.
Also my mom is super detail oriented and she'd come do inspection when we were finished and would make us redo anything that wasn't perfect. Mirror, counter, sink and faucet had to be spotless and shiney; toilet had to be scrubbed top to bottom (including the outside and "feet" which mom would check extra closely) and last step was mopping the floor backwards so we mopped ourselves out of the bathroom leaving a perfectly shiny floor.
We got a whopping $15 a week for this and we did it for years, haha.
