... particularly if you had a stairway that's open (i.e. no walls to use -- the gate would have to go between banisters)?
We reeeeally don't want to drill into the wood!

I've been trying to figure this out, too! We have a split level and two sets of stairs to block off from our entry/living room area. So far, here's the options I'm exploring:

@Mrs. Yoyo: if you read the reviews, it is more like a light pine color. We have not opened the box yet, so I cannot confirm.

We just propped a gate in between the banisters. I also did not want to drill one it (the gate at the top is drilled in though). Even though this wasn't sturdy, we just had to supervise and make sure LO didn't go up! We only needed it for a few months and then he stopped trying to go on the stairs. Now he is old enough to wait.

We used this and then attached the gate to the wood block. Worked really well!
